Sakana Namazu: Japan’s Specialized AI Model Put to the Test

Sakana AI’s latest release, Namazu (named after the legendary Japanese catfish), is a Japanese-tuned large language model built on Moonshot’s open Kimi K2.6. Released in August 2026 with a generous 256K–262K context window, it is optimized for Japanese language, business customs, honorifics (keigo), and reduced over-refusals while preserving strong reasoning and coding performance.

In this review, the model is tested in a real-world coding scenario via OpenRouter (often cheaper than the official API). After enabling paid endpoints, Namazu was asked to analyze an image-editing SDK project, perform a full code review, and generate structured improvement suggestions saved as an HTML report. It successfully identified architectural issues, security concerns, documentation gaps, and project direction recommendations—demonstrating solid capability for understanding complex codebases and delivering actionable feedback.

Access is straightforward: OpenAI-compatible API through Sakana’s official endpoint or OpenRouter. Pricing is competitive (around $0.95/M input and $4/M output tokens on the official side), and the model supports tools like web search and code execution. While primarily strong in Japanese business and cultural contexts, it also handles general coding tasks effectively for developers seeking alternatives to mainstream Western models.
