[TV Discovery] BoJack Horseman

Two months ago now, I posted a Top 10 Adult Animated Shows list and one entry got a few comments with people saying they'd heard of it but hadn't seen it. It was the number 2 spot, BoJack Horseman, and so it's about time I lay out my case for why BoJack Horseman is the second best adult animated show around. I recently rewatched all four seasons in preparation for season 5 which is coming later this year, and it feels like now is as good a time as any to write this post.

This satirical animated show is the brainchild of American comedian, writer and actor Raphael Bob-Waksberg, who said that he was heavily influenced by Canadian The Newsroom, as well as the Simpsons ability to tell a serious story without sacrificing humour. The show follows the title character BoJack, an anthropomorphic horse who had a hit show in the 90s (Horsin' Around) and now struggles to cope with his fading fame and self-destructive behaviour. Although the show is set in a very satirical world, it also deals with some heavy subject matter such as depression, trauma, addiction, self-destructive behavior, and the human experience. It's an existentialists wet dream if truth be told.

Will Arnett plays our favourite sitcom starring horse, with Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad, The Path) playing loveable bum Todd, Alison Brie (Community, Unikitty) as Diane and Amy Sedaris stars as BoJacks agent/manager/girlfriend Princess Caroline. The humour is complex, with clever word-play being a common feature and the puns are so slick and fast you'd be forgiven for missing them. Each season just gets better, as we watch BoJack both grow as a horse-man and also be the cause of his own undoing. There is a story arch in the fourth season that deals with dementia and old age so well, I don't want to ruin anything, but to call it moving would be an understatement. That's the thing with this show, it's both one of the funniest and also one of the smartest shows around.
