Missing people - The Collectors
A possible downside of being abducting - we could be a rare treat on an intergalactic Smörgåsbord
85,000 people are missing in the USA and we have no one has a clue where they are.
A large portion of missing people are eventually found, or they go home again. Some, sadly, are found - dead. But some are never found at all. They just vanish without a trace and are never seen again. No bodies and no clues. They simply disappear into thin air.
Their status is a mystery.
My hypothesis: Alien abduction. - We are a precious and rare commodity to "Collectors".
I’m basing my case on the presumption that there exists an intergalactic market with infinite commondies and infinite demands. Intelligent life, I think, will always want to own things.
Life (including bacteria) in the universe, is an extraordinarily rare phenomena due to the Goldilocks Enigma. To get the conditions for life just right is very unusual.
We are prime artifacts for "Collectors" like, Taneleer Tivan, in Guardians of the Galaxy - but he only needs one. There are advanced intergalactic aliens that aren't interested in owning a living human being, as part of their extensive collection. You're prime real estate baby!
You have a huge value on the interstellar market.
Who supplies collectors? Suppliers - anyone or anything with a spacecraft that's able to travel to earth. It's probably an expensive trip with limited space on board, so it might not be that profitable. Hence the mass wholesale of the human race is unlikely. Although entire towns have gone missing - Roanoke Colony. It's also probably illegal - I'd imagine aliens have laws (and law breakers).
Collectors are also keen to gather flora and fauna from earth as these artifacts, even moss and grass, have a huge value.
In regard to the economics of this industry think of it like Bitcoin. Think how vast the universe is, then think of a bug on earth like the the panda ant. You catch my drift? Limited supply. Scarcity adds value. So in a way - you're Bitcoin to aliens.
Also with the ever increasing threat of a nuclear disaster (power, war etc) it’s possible that we'll be wiped out for good. Before this happens I think that the intergalactic market could boom for the humans and you'd have a lot of missing people (but really they'd be saved). The demand would go up because the supply would go down. Its like destroying Bitcoin - the more people who lose their private keys, the less there is and the higher the price. Destroying ourselves is like destroying private keys.
One bad possibility is we might not be for collecting like a trading card game. We could be an intergalactic delicacy, and eaten.
One upside of alien visits though is the "junk" they leave behind. When aliens travel to earth to collect and study, they leave their garbage behind. This idea is presented in Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky:
"A picnic. Picture a forest, a country road, a meadow. Cars drive off the country road into the meadow, a group of young people get out carrying bottles, baskets of food, transistor radios, and cameras. They light fires, pitch tents, turn on the music. In the morning they leave. The animals, birds, and insects that watched in horror through the long night creep out from their hiding places. And what do they see?
Old spark plugs and old filters strewn around... Rags, burnt-out bulbs, and a monkey wrench left behind... And of course, the usual mess—apple cores, candy wrappers, charred remains of the campfire, cans, bottles, somebody’s handkerchief, somebody’s penknife, torn newspapers, coins, faded flowers picked in another meadow. (Atkady and Boris Strugatsky, Roadside Picnic, English ed., 1977)
In this analogy, the nervous animals are the humans who venture forth after the Visitors left, discovering items and anomalies that are ordinary to those who discarded them, but incomprehensible or deadly to those who find them." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadside_Picnic
How do you think we found out about microwave ovens?
Everything in your phone was owned by the government before it was released to the public and commercialized by Google.
The CIA and FBI are the first people on the scene of a close encounter because they know that all kinds of cool stuff is left behind. Then the government can then collect it and use their boffins at area 51, and other highly secured military bases, to figure out the left behind space junk.
There are downsides also - the bubonic plague. For aliens this was just like the common cold. (the reverse is what happened in War of the Worlds movie). People who survived the black death lived longer as a result oddly.
This is where a lot of folk law tries to stop children wandering alone in the woods at night. The boogie man is there (abduction prevention).
When was the last time you walked completely alone in the woods? I don't think its a good idea because you would probably get abducted by aliens like in the film Fire in the Sky.
Anyway I don't have much proof for this but I think that when first contact finally happens we'll get answers. (NASA are putting a bunch of money into this and they believe in aliens so I'm not that crazy.)
