ULOG 003-- Cyclades Island Hopping Journey Continues {#SteemitChallenge Day 14 of 28}

in #ulog6 years ago

Today concluded Geets and I's travel expeditions in Sifnos. We boarded our ferry at 13:00 hours and continued our island hopping journey to our third island- the island of Kimolos.

Kimolos is very different in comparison to the other two islands we have visited thus far. This island has not yet been commercialized and geared strictly towards tourism.

The old characteristic roots of the villages and towns still remain, which is unique is so many regards. The island is quite small and is only home to about 650 inhabitants in 3 main villages.

Walking through the village streets of Chorio (the island's capital) you will find old stone roads, which weave through small white alleys, leading to local's homes.

If you venture off the beaten path a ways you will come across a number of rural terraces and old huts that appear to be uninhabited, but are, in fact, homes to the indigenous population.

Kimolos is a very historical place dating back nearly 6,500 years and largely resembles the symbolic aspect often times associated with Cycladic ancestry.

I am really looking forward to exploring around the island more tomorrow with Geets.

When we first arrived, the place appeared to be deserted; drowned of all signs of life. We walked kilometers on end (mainly uphill) trying to find a room to let for our time here, but failed to find anything.

Suddenly, Geets and I heard some footsteps approaching from behind. I quickly turned and saw a tall, dark gentleman walking slowly our way.

Immediately, I asked if he spoke any English, and he nodded his head as if to say, a bit. I went on to ask if he knew where we could find a room to let for the evening.

With no hesitation, he took 3 steps back and knocked on the door to his left. We could have been anywhere in the entire village, but we happened to be right in front of the doorway.

If this isn't destiny, then I don't know what is.

"Mariaaaa," the man bellowed.

No more than 5 seconds later a woman opened the door. Maria and the man conversed back and forth speaking Greek, as the woman spoke no English whatsoever.

The conversation went on for a brief moment and then the man turned to Geets and I and said, "Maria will show you a room."

Ahhhh, what a huge sigh of relief this was for Geets and I after all that it took to get to this point.

Out of nowhere appeared a woman, obviously a tourist, carrying her luggage down the same alley we had ventured.

From a distance, the woman appeared to be old and oriental, as she was slowly wobbling her way down the street.

The woman yelled out, "Ohhh, I am so glad I ran into you guys, I have been looking everywhere for somebody to speak to."

What she basically meant was that she also, was looking for a place to lay her head this evening.

The island is definitely not prepared for all the tourists to start showing up yet, as tourism is the heaviest in the months of July and August. We are traveling preseason, which for Geets and I, is the way to fly.

Maria proceeded to take us on a local route; an old dirt path winding through people's yards back near the main drag. We walked up the stairs to a nice place known as 'Faros,' which means lighthouse in the English language.

Apparently this name is quite common here in Greece because we visited a local village called Faros on our last day while in Sifnos.

Faros studios happened to be a family run business because Maria turned out to be the mother of the young woman who greeted us at the door.

She spoke fantastic English, so communicating was not an issue. She was very accommodating and showed us the ins and outs of getting our way around the island.

Tomorrow should be a fun-filled day with lots of adventurous expeditions. Stay tuned for more in tomorrows post - {#SteemitChallenge Day 15 of 28!}

Are you a writer?? I mean, do you write short story or novel? I would like to be able to write like you, but English is not my native language, and I am lazy to learn 😂

Very beautiful place. Must be fun to walk around the village.

I enjoy writing a lot, but do not write short stories or novels.. at least not yet. I would love to publish a book at some point in my life though for sure.

It is good that you practice your English here. It is a great way to pick up on new words and grammar techniques. Your English seems to be pretty decent from what I have seen.

Keep up the good work, my friend :)

Wonderful Location

yes indeed-- a trip i will most definitely be embarking on again in the near future

Cheers !!
