Holmes and Watson (film): As bad as you've heard

in #undefined5 years ago

I had read that this movie was a disaster and also things like there were no advanced screenings for critics allowed and other tricks that kind of indicate that the producers were also very aware that this movie was a turd.

I don't need to explain what this movie is about because everyone on the planet is familiar with Sherlock Holmes. It was always going to be slapstick and juvenile because that is what Will Ferrell does for the most part. Normally I feel that the combination of Will and his buddy John C. Reilly.

I really like the combination of Will and John as Stepbrothers and Talladega Nights are two of my favorite comedies of recent times. That doesn't change the fact that almost everything about this movie is just plain awful: There is very little in this film that is remotely funny, the way that they interject political leanings into the skits is just dumb, both Will and John have terrible and over-the-top British accents, and they turned both Watson and Holmes into morons who accidentally do something right every now and then. It's just stupid and it simply didn't work.

The fact that they present the Queen in a negative and bumbling light was kind of uncalled for as well. I don't know what they were thinking when they greenlit this film. It has been nominated for a bunch of Razzies (awards you don't want) and while the films cost $42 million to make it managed to make 41.9 million at the box office - and no, I am not making that up.

A terrible movie that doesn't even have the ability to be classified as "so bad it's good," Holmes and Watson is actually irritating to behold and it is a real shame that I can say that about 2 of my favorite comedians. Every dog has it's day, I suppose.

On a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I begrudgingly award Holmes and Watson an unfortunately well-deserved overall score of....

I see your review on that dud and raise you with the all female version of ghostbusters that came out a few years ago.

Yeah, that was pretty awful as well. For GB it was particularly atrocious since the original is one of my personal favorite movies of my childhood.
