Felling the Pines - Part 1

in #undefined5 years ago (edited)

First of the two pines goes down.

The tree was about 20m tall and 1.5m diameter at the base.

I did my standard cut on trees that size, the trusty old split-level back cut with standard scarf and as many wedges as I can get in.

I hadn’t done a tree like this in 11years and was a little rusty. Also the tree was too wide for the 24” bar on the chainsaw I used, so when I made the scarf I made a mess of it. The cuts didn’t line up and I had to tidy it up and make sure I had a clean apex and didn’t bypass the cut. In doing this I made the scarf more than 1/3rd the diameter of the tree, getting easily close to half. This made putting the tree over with wedges mechanically harder.

The split-level back cut went ok. I didn’t get it perfect. The second cut did not meet up with the first by about 2cm, for about 10cm’s in the middle of the tree. So instead of it splitting nicely through the grain I ended up ripping out a piece of heart wood when it fell.

Besides making a partial pig’s dinner out of it, the rest of the procedure went well. Especially the part where the tree ending up on the ground where it was intended.

Now for the clean-up and burn before moving onto the last standing tree of the western fence upgrade project.
