Stop spraying perfume on that casket

in #untalented6 years ago

Cold and stiff, rigid and unmoving, the body lays peacefully in the coffin.
Mourners all around weeping and wailing.
Loved ones can't stop crying.
Condolences shared and received.
Tributes cited and recited.

Flowers and wreathes are placed on the coffin.
Orations from young and old.
What a great man he was, strong and bold.
All said "You left too early for the great beyond."
Your sweet, smiling face we want to daily behold.

Gently, slowly, pallbearers lowered the coffin.
Tears flow freely, people screaming.
They said "you never told us you were leaving."
Oh! What a deep pain, what a large void,
Miserable, your departure left us, who will fill this void?

Now we give ashes to ashes, soil to soil, all on the coffin.
One after the other, we march forward,
One shoveful of soil we each pour on you as you press onward,
Yes, you fought so hard, you were no coward.
Still, no easy way to move on, yet we'll go frontward.

Days, months, years passed, but seeing you again is all we crave.
Year in, year out we'd bring fresh flowers and perfume to your grave.
We were applauded and hailed for being brave.
No one saw what we hid in us, our best act is what we gave.

Shallow.
Empty.
Desolate.

We wandered on through life,
Visiting that grave every year, within there's a strife.
Pain, hurt, betrayal, and all that negative vibes grow rife.
Sometimes we'd wonder if we should end it with a knife.

Harmed with perfume, headed to the grave,
Deep within a thought emerged, how long shall we be slaves?
Lost in the world, hidden in our own very cave,
It's time to say goodbye so new ways can be paved.

This isn't a poem, no.
It isn't even about a dead person,
It is about a dead habit/character/attitude.

You were good but got paid with evil and you stopped being good,
Year after year, you'd reminisce and say,
"I remember when I was this, when I was that"
Stop living on past glories, forge on.

You were bad and then you became good,
Yet you'd always go back to your vomit like the proverbial dog,
Every new year, you write a new resolution.

Stop spraying perfume on that casket!
