Leaked Emails Spark Fresh Debate Over Past Political Connections

Recently surfaced documents from the U.S. Justice Department have revealed previously private email conversations involving Jeffrey Epstein and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. In these exchanges, Epstein expressed extremely negative opinions about former U.S. President Donald Trump, despite reports that the two had known each other socially in earlier years.
According to the released messages, Epstein used unusually harsh language when referring to Trump, questioning his character and stability. He reportedly described him as reckless and potentially harmful, suggesting that he viewed Trump as a serious concern.
The emails indicate that Trump was a recurring subject in discussions between Epstein and Summers, including exchanges dating back to early 2017.
Epstein repeatedly emphasized his distrust and strong criticism during those conversations.
The controversy deepened after additional reports revealed that Summers had remained in communication with Epstein for many years — even after Epstein’s 2008 conviction related to charges involving a minor.
Further reports suggested that Summers had, at times, sought Epstein’s personal advice, which raised ethical concerns among critics.
Following the public reaction, Summers issued a statement expressing regret for maintaining contact with Epstein. He acknowledged that continuing the relationship was a mistake and stated that he accepts responsibility. He also announced he would reduce his public engagements while continuing his academic work, saying the decision was intended to help rebuild trust.
