Blockchain Business Intelligence: #nigeria Tag Trends & Distribution
Details
In all of the similar country specific tag analysis I've done, the Nigeria tag is most interesting in terms of growth. Being the 32nd largest country in the world with a population of nearly 194 million (almost twice as much as the Philippines), almost 50% of which are internet users; the growth of the Nigerian Steemit community seen in the last couple of months in the chart below may only be the beginning.
Outline
I have outlines the data-points that will be presented in this contribution related to the Nigeria tag.
- A 19 Month Snapshot of the Nigeria Statistic
- Month on Month Growth in Post Count and Payout Value
- Top Categories Used with Nigeria Tag Sorted by Payout Value
- Top Authors Sorted By Payout on Post with Nigeria Tag
- Growth Trend in User-base Using the Nigeria Tag
- Payout Range Distribution on Posts with Nigeria Tag
- Distribution of Payout Between Post with Nigeria Tag and Comments on Posts with Nigeria Tag
Scope of Analysis
I generated the data to present the trend and distribution of payout between posts and comments from inception in March 2016 to February, 2 2018 (Friday 12NN GMT). I removed the February 2018 data when presenting trends since that month will only have one and a half days worth of data.
On charts where I showed top categories and authors, I limited the count to 25 so that the charts and labels will be clear and visible.
Tools
Like in previous similar analysis on country specific tags, I used arcange's Steem SQL Public Database to acquire the data-points related to the count of comments, posts, total_payout_value, author, and parent_author.
I ran this SQL query in an excel sheet:
SELECT *
FROM Comments (NOLOCK)
WHERE json_metadata like '%"nigeria"%'
I was using the category column in previous analysis of similar nature. I decided to use the json_metadata column in this one to capture all the posts and comments where the Nigeria tag was used, regardless whether it was the primary tag used. Because of this, I was able to add a chart that shows the top categories used with the Nigeria tag.
I've been searching for other charting tools that will allow me to present charts and tables with cleaner and clearer look and feel. I spent time learning Power BI and used it for charting in this contribution.
Results
Here is a snapshot of the Nigeria tag statistics from when it was first seen July 18, 2016 to the last entry capture in this analysis in February 2, 2018. One of the first things I noticed in comparison to other similar country specific tags I contributed in the past, was the low count of comments in Nigeria tag. This will be detailed more later in the distribution of payout between posts and comments.
Write here the results of your analysis. Provide charts and table to easily read the data.
Post Count & Total Payout By Month
While the Nigeria tag's been used as early as July 2016 it only started gaining momentum a year later in June 2017. The tag has made a lot of breakthroughs both in terms of count of posts and payout value. I recent months, the count of posts more than doubled from November to December, and similar growth in posting activity is seen when December 2017 and January 2018 are compared. In terms of payout value, the January 2018 posts are valued four times as much compared to that of November 2017.
Top 25 Categories Used with Nigeria Tag Sorted by Payout Value
The top two categories in terms of payout for the Nigeria tag follows that of the overall platform as seen on the explore section of Steemit. The third most highly paid category when Nigeria tag is used are Utopian contribution. Other notable most paid categories when Nigeria tag is used are:
- #stach - STACH is a community innovation Hub in Port Harcourt, Nigeria powered by STEEM to decentralize the offline.
- #busy and #dtube - which are both know known to be interfaces connected to the Steem blockchain.
- #promo-steem and #meetup - which we see are both done specially well by the Nigerian community. I think this has a lot to do with the exponential growth in both user-base and posting activities.
Top 25 Authors Sorted By Payout on Post with Nigeria Tag
It is interesting that the top five in this list are all known for promoting and advocating Steemit in their communities.
- ejemai - is a sndbox cohort who leads stach. He very recently launched Stach 2 with the goal of bring more Nigerians who are currently offline from his community into Steemit.
- ehiboss - is a known community leader who initiated SIN; Steemit in Nigeria. He is also doing projects related to Steemit community growth, and community building.
- surpassinggoogle - I don't think this needs any description. Terry is known to advocate Steemit in developing nations like Nigeria and the Philippines. In fact his advocacy in #untalented made it to the top categories for the Nigeria tag.
- tojukaka - is another known advocate of Steemit from Nigeria. He can be seen in multiple meet ups in different Nigerian states. He recently spoke about the Purpose of Steemit in an Ibadan Steem meet up.
Unique Authors Using Nigeria Tag Growth Trend
With the top authors advocating Steemit growth, and top categories related to promoting Steemit, it is no surprise that the user-base in Nigeria is growing at an exponential rate.
Payout Range Distribution on Nigeria Tag
While the growth in user-base, posting activities, and total payout on posts where Nigeria tag is used are really good indicators; there seems to be a huge variance in terms of rewards. There remains to be a significant number of posts that are not getting rewards at all.
In this chart it can be seen that nearly a quarter gets 0, and over a quarter gets $1 or less in posts where Nigeria tag is used.
Taking recency into account I looked at the same data-point for the last quarter of 2017. There was some improvement and the post with 0 payout went down to only 14%, but the $0.01 was 32%.
Payout Distribution Between Posts & Comments
in an earlier contribution where I analyzed the overall platform-wide Distribution of Payout Between Posts and Comments, I noted that 7% of the payout goes to comments. In Nigeria tag, the payout on comments is just a little over a quarter of a percentage. While the engagement offline is great, there seems to be opportunity in building engagement via commenting and rewarding comments in Nigeria tag.

Thank you for the contribution. It has been approved.
Hi @steemitph, nice work! Seems like the Nigerian users in average are frequent utopian contributors as well! The low number of comments surprises me, that's not even one comment per author... maybe a lot of one-time posters?

Interesting point @crokkon, I went back to the data and out of 5571 unique authors who used #Nigeria tag, 45% only had one or 2 posts using that tag. This might explain low engagement in comments.
Hey @crokkon, I just gave you a tip for your hard work on moderation. Upvote this comment to support the utopian moderators and increase your future rewards!

The compound interest here is something to marvel over. Thank you for this post @steemitph. It means a lot for me, because I'm from South Africa and Nigerians are deep when it comes to the internet in my country. They own more than 70% of the internet cafes and have solved a major problem, by making access to the internet affordable that even the man in the street may gain valuable information on a daily basis..
