Hard UX: Why Low Hanging Fruit is For UX Kids

Easy UX

A lot of what I see in UX and Startup culture is stuff about “low hanging fruit”. Landing page experiments, certain types of Design Jam/Workshops and loads of “advice” & consulting is all about grabbing the easy user, customer, buck.

I absolutely have no problem grabbing easy stuff but what I’m talking about goes beyond that. It is a culture. Startups today try a plan for a while and if it doesn’t work they fold up shop, create a new logo and try something else. “Startuping” is an end to itself, a product, a topic for conferences. Again, I have nothing against startups - quite the opposite, I love them. And I absolutely have nothing against perseverance, “If at first you don’t succeed…” and all. But once upon a time a person put his or her heart, soul, fortune and life into their company from the start. They built something. The believed in it. They lived and breathed it. Today the company is disposable.

And the entire focus is on doing what’s easy.
