Weekly Newsletter - 2nd Edition
Authored by @evecab
Dear readers,
Welcome to week #2 of the Vegans of Steemit Newsletter! Let's see what happened in the vegan & veggie community these past days and catch up with some of the best posts out there!
The goal of this Newsletter is to showcase the most interesting publications from our vegan Steemit & Whaleshares community during the week, and introduce new members worth checking out. We also feature a Q&A section at the end of the newsletter, in which non-vegans can ask anything they need to know about veganism and how to get there. Help us spread the vegan love!
- @lolzwithlisa brought the annual Animal Rights March to our attention which took place yesterday (August 25th), and we sure hope that many people joined the march. More than 10,000 attendees were expected to join in London only. The number of attendees keeps growing every year, which is extremely encouraging and further proof that the vegan movement is here to stay and take over!
- @apolymask is warning us of the violent opposition vegans face during marches and protests, and points out one of the most influential trolls out there. It's a shame that a peaceful movement which stands for the rights of the most defenseless is under attack by some individuals who make it their mission to sabotage vegans.
- Enjoy some vegan "eggs" sunny side up with tofu for breakfast! Thank you @jenniferferris for showing us how!
- Soups always make for a delicious meal, no matter the season! This one caught our eye, so if you have some fresh veggies in your kitchen start chopping them up and follow this mouth-watering recipe of @plantstoplanks:
- Do you want to impress your meat-eating friends with some vegan pate? Then this recipe is for you! Thank you @monika-homa for sharing this with us!
- This week, our Steemian of the week is not vegan, but @bait002 and his team developed this new platform which helps a lot of vegans access their funds more easily and allows us to exchange and send our Steem directly into our bank account in our local currency via PayPal. The official account name is @steemexchanger and you can check out @bait002 and his team's post for more information about how to do it:
How can I avoid gaining weight while vegan?
Some vegan noobs or people who think about switching to a plant based diet are worried about gaining weight, because they fear that increasing their carb intake will make them weigh heavier on the scale. Some newly turned vegans have in fact gained weight, and if that's your case, you may be making a mistake when cooking your meals. @bvgan is shedding some light on his issue and gives us her advice to avoid gaining weight while vegan:
@apolymask I think the only solution is to focus on compassion, the reason we should be vegans. I have witnessed violence on both sides, the vegans and non-vegans. I don't respond to these petty behaviours, andI find it harder to excuse the latter. Many people become vegan for an ideology. I'm personally not a fan of marches and protests any longer. I've done my share but have been embracing activism in more politically influential and creative ways.
I tend to agree. Including the marches and protests.. I think it's better to have a discussion with people. But.. I understand why some people do it and I can appreciate it on some levels.
I'm curious about the politically influential and creative ways you refer to. Sounds interesting!
Very true, learning how to dialogue with people is a skill we can't ignore any longer.
As far as politics goes, I have been collaborating with the City administration in Montreal on various animal rights issues, among which banning the horse-drawn carriages with my anti-caleche campaign. It will finally happen after 8 years of advocating for a ban. Dec. 31st 2019 is the end of this abusive industry..
This campaign has taken much of my time and I'm happy I can now dedicate it to creating educational videos, e-books for children, and a documentary about the carriage industry.
In 2019 I'll be running as a candidate for the Animal Protection Party at the Federal Elections. We have no chance of winning due to the first-past the post electoral system, but it helps to get the platform out there and perhaps in the near future when we finally have a proportional system, the animals will have their say through us in the Canadian Parliament.
We need to change the current pro-meat/dairy laws and introduce animal rights laws.
Yes, animals should vote :) in their own ways of course!!
Some good info there! I like these vegan updates. Going to have to keep an eye out for them more often now that I'm aware of them. :) Also thanks for including one of the blogs I created! Was one I thought deserved more attention, so it's great to see you help out with that a little bit! Cheers! And keep up the awesome work! :D
thanks @apolymask =) I'll post one every Sunday, so if you have good articles to present feel free to DM me!
