The insect shown in the news is called giant water bug and it is a harmless insect, seldom cause problems to humans. The fake part is how they tell people that this insect is a vector of a very dangerous skin altering virus that will infect humans by merely touching it.

The damage depicted in the news articles are irregular holes that a person with trypophobia fear the most.
Trypophobia is a pathologic fear of holes. This condition is yet to be listed in reputable scientific journals.
