Subnautica Review

in #video8 years ago (edited)

Subnautica development started in 2013/2014, during the survival type games madness.
The studio Unknown Worlds  with his experience with "Natural Selection" had the risky ambition to offer something really unique: an alien planet formed of 95% water with its own ecosystem. In early access since 2014, the complete version was released on january 2018 so we can finally dive into it and the least we can say is that it is indeed a fresh experience in the survival genre.

We notice the presence of an interesting scenario (more inventive than “I crashed, I need to go home”) and a true ending.
The game begins as your spacecraft suddenly crash on a mysterious planet. On board of the Lifepod 5 in the middle of the ocean, with very little supplies, your mission is to survive. Obviously, the lifepod is seriously damaged and your first objective will be to repair the power cells and the radio.

If you choose the survival mode, which I recommend, except a few hints from your PDA, almost no information will be given, you’ll have to explore and experiment.
First of all, meet your three basic needs: water, food, and oxygen.
Oxygen is the mechanic who makes Subnautica so unique, during your exploration of the ocean you’ll have to constantly keep an eye on your oxygen level if you don’t want to see your dead body resting forever in the abyss.

The planet possesses a truly vivid and complex ecosystem, creatures feed themselves, predators go out and hunt at night, etc.. Subnautica features a wide range of biomes to explore and coexist with. Each biome contains its own set of flora and fauna to discover and resources to harvest. The game constantly invites you to the exploration with a robust crafting system that allows you to build your seabase, unlock new tools and improve your equipment to go deeper.

Beyond a certain sense of wonder at the discovery of a new biome, a new structure or creature, Subnautica also manages to instill a real sense of oppression to the most reckless player who would venture into deep waters. Once lost in the dark, with a gauge of oxygen to monitor several hundred meters deep, see a colossal shadow passing in front of you will give some chills and will often have the effect of driving you straight to the surface. The depths created by the abyss of the game is omnipresent, greatly helped by a neat sound environment. The game also knows how to disorient you, make you lose your markers by putting at your disposal only rudimentary navigation tools. This will certainly frustrate some, but the feeling of being lost in a huge ocean is significantly strengthened.

Conclusion:
Without a doubt, Subnautica is one of the best open-world survival games in recent years. Exotic, innovative and very original, it really has something to seduce both neophyte and survival veteran. This is clearly the game you need if you enjoy exploration and discovery because the seabed has lots of surprises and misfortunes awaiting for you.
Will you conquer your fear and discover what’s hiding in the abyssal darkness?
