Unraveling mysteries: Pokemon Gold and Silver Beta

in #videogames6 years ago (edited)

-Hello, dearest steemians.

Remember Pokemon Gold and Silver? Yap, those Pokemon, that game you played as a child, as one of the most influential game of all time and being considered by a large part of the Fanbase (And Myself) as the best Pokemon games ever made, due to its own characteristics and improvement. The graphics, mapping, design and their unique features were large and perfect ,being kept in our minds until this day. But, what really made us all blew up was the enormous amount of secrets and ideas that the game hide while developing, secrets of which we could only have a glimpse of.

But, i’ll tell you what, all those fan-dreamed secrets came true. Take a seat, because what you’re about to see, it’s what soaked as a children.

A few days ago, a group fan group of The Cutting Room Floor hacked a lost demo room of Pokemon Gold and Silver from 1997, the room was hidden for over 20 years
all across the board. The beta version of the title contained an even larger map, new characters and a bunch of unreleased pokemons. Some pokemon are pre-evolutions of first gen pokemon like Meowth, Pikachu, Goldeen, Paras, Doduo, Growlithe and even Grimer. Other are altern designs and evolutions (Some of which were re-used in futures generations) of starters, Slowking, Weepinbell, Farfetch'd and… Leafeon?

Here we can see the original starters, we can notice that Bayleef, had a very different appearance before, seeming more like a flower and being completly not similar with his evolutive line. The fire starter was a brand new bear, and the water one seems to resemble a medium term between the Loch Ness Monster and a really early version of Popplio.

Pokemons like Entei, Raikou or Suicune were not very good looking in their beginnings

Some beta versions of pokemon that made it into the final version, Sunflora was meant to be Grass/Psychic, Bellossom had a poison type and Girafarig counted with a twisted design and a Normal/Dark type in it. Also Porygon2 amd Politoed had a completely different design, that remind us about some

Here are some of the pokemon evolutions that were never released! We can see an evolution for Lickitung and Tangela that were the base for their later evolutions in Gen 4, just that...A little more weird. Also, we can see evolutions for pokemon with low stats like Farfetch’d, Qwilfish, Pinsir and Ditto that we really wish could got into the games, and an altern evolution to Weepinbell through an unreleased object called Poison Stone, this stone was set to be an early version of the Sun Stone.

This is the part where all gets interesting, the unreleased brand new pokemons, in the image there’s a pokemon called turban, better know as Sloking’ shell (YES, it was a new and self-reliant pokemon), others remarkables pokemons are Norowara, a kind of voodoo doll that may had inspire Mimikyu, and Tsuinzu, a pokemon that in beta had a deep bond with girafarig. Two reused pokemons were shown too, Gurotesu (Later inspiration for Gorebyss), Berurun (Seems like a primitive Litten) and the very same Leafeon were in the beta too!

Other pokemons like Ikari and Raitora remind a lot the fantarts, with some of them being impressive accurate and alike with the design of those pokemons.

And there, we can admire some pre-evos of pokemons like Vulpix, Grimer, Mr Mime, Growlithe, Doduo, Tangela, Goldeen, Paras, Meowth and Ponyta. Remember that this generation was the “breeding” one, featuring eggs and baby pokemons for the first time, so it's no rare to expect stuff like this.

About the map, it was completely different to the final Johto. It seems to be based on the entirety of Japan, with kanto , (found in the area of the real life Kanto) included and reduced to one map. The map contains early versions of some johto places and a really LARGE dead tree forrest.

Even though most of the map is mapped, just some places are accessible, "New Type," "North," and "Blue Forest." are cities programmed in it, these cities resemble a lot to Sinnoh Region cities like Canalave City or Snowpoint, revealing that these cities were designed years before their release and were reused for Gen 4 (As mostly of the reused stuff from the beta, that’s why in Later game it’s mentioned that sinnoh and johto have a connection) Just Compare.

If we talk about events in the game, there are a little big differences.

The protagonist has brother (named Ken). You get an email from Professor Oak telling you to go to his lab, then your rival approaches you outside your house and asks you for what you call your mother . You walk into the grass and Green stops you, bringing you to the lab like his grandfather did years prior. Green and Oak ask if you two want your starters, and then Oak takes you into the back room where the starters are located. You leave, talk to Green, and then Oak gives you and your rival Pokedexes. Your rival challenges you (unfortunately his team is missing so he challenges you with either garbage or things meant for demo trainers). If you somehow manage to beat him, you leave and your mother gives you 6 Pokeballs and the Pokegear. Later. Demo Ends.

Early Johto Map

As an extra feature (And to end this post with style) there was an alternative to walk and rid the bike, and it was… SKATEBOARDING

AH, and the game had lots of non-important minigames as always.

Well, this is all. Now, you know something knew about that thing you spent hours playing of, so thank you very much for reading...So Share the information with friends who likes pokemon too.
