The 100 most popular Steemit posts of all time!
The 100 most-viewed posts on Steemit
Hi all, welcome back to my blog. If you have been following me for a while, you probably know that I occasionally like to dig into the data and try to find some interesting results. Recently I've been taking a look at the view counts of different posts on Steemit, and I decided to make a list of the most popular posts of all time. This is actually a non-trivial problem, since view counts are not actually available through any public API, and of course they are not stored on the blockchain. Only Steemit, Inc. has access to the database of page view counts, so needless to say it was a slightly difficult process to actually acquire these values.
But, without further ado, I would like to present the 100 most-viewed posts of all time! Note that steemit.com only started recording views sometime in late 2016, so this does not include views from before that time, and of course this does not include post views through any other block explorer.

Who are the biggest contributors to the top 100 list?
Well, interestingly, love him or hate him, @haejin is generating a crazy amount of traffic on Steemit. He has by far the most highly-viewed posts of any user.
Author | Number of top 100 most-viewed posts |
---|---|
@haejin | 45 |
@jerrybanfield | 5 |
@kingscrown | 3 |
@eosio | 2 |
@heimindanger | 2 |
@lukestokes | 2 |
@project7 | 2 |
@quickfingersluc | 2 |
@theshadowbrokers | 2 |
I was also surprised and very happy to see that my post on EOS vs. Ethereum also made the top 100 list! :D
I hope this information is interesting for you! I believe this is the first post that dug in to the post view count data, so I'm hoping to look further into the data and see if any other interesting results pop out at me. But in the meantime, I wish you all the best!
Best wishes,
Trogdor :)
Thanks for compiling this list, it's quite interesting.
We see a lot of the same names, such as @haejin, again and again but we can also see that a few of the most viewed posts are from Steemians who don't receive a lot of attention inhouse.
I'm thinking of @docdelux, who's an excellent writer,has a large following on facebook, but has had difficulty gaining traction on Steemit. IF you don't know about @docdelux, seriously, go check out some of his previous posts!
Also, I found that an eye-opening article by @an0nkn0wledge with over 51,000 views is curiously missing from the list. Maybe you could add it in;)
https://steemit.com/politics/@an0nkn0wledge/the-curious-case-of-the-death-of-joe-scarborough-s-intern-lori-klausutis
Cheers, good stuff!
Hey v4vapid! Thanks for stopping by :) I'm glad you found it interesting. It is interesting about @haejin, how he hardly interacts with followers, and yet he generates a tremendous amount of views. I know that people accuse him of abusing the reward pool, but I think if we actually considered his average rewards per page view, I have a feeling they would be surprisingly low compared to some other authors. Just something to think about, personally I like to avoid controversy! :)
Thank you for pointing out the post that I missed! I limited my search to posts with more than 50 votes and/or more than 50 comments, because I assumed that would include the most viewed posts. Apparently I missed at least one! Unfortunately the view counts are not actually available anywhere except on the specific pages, so the only way to retrieve them is with a web-crawler, and with slowing that down appropriately so as not to create a load on the website, it would take weeks to crawl through all the millions of posts! haha
I will certainly add the post that you mentioned, and once again, thanks for stopping by!
Love him or hate him, the data shows that he's generating a lot of views and bringing eyeballs to steemit content. I think he could reduce the number of posts per day by combining several posts into one and perhaps people would view this as less 'rapey'.
As far as your research goes, i TOTALLY understand. Recently I've been manually compiling statistics for a series I do on missing children and it's very painstaking work.
I can appreciate how difficult it must be making a comprehensive list like this with millions of posts out there!
One last thing, like another commenter here mentioned, you're 2 pieces on ETH vs EOS were very enlightening. So thanks for putting that together. EOS really is one of the most exciting projects under development.
Sorry to butt in here!
I want to, but can't consider page views as a reliable metric for analysis as the count is upped each time you refresh the page yourself.
If this view could be shown as unique, that would cut down (but not eliminate - multiple browsers, cache/IP refresh/change) the risk of gaming. It's quite easy to find an app/write a program that refreshes your page constantly and so I would be weary of using this as an accurate sign of popularity.
Cheers!
Oh for real? I hadn't noticed that a refresh would increase the view count. And to be honest I never considered that someone might build an app to constantly refresh their page/views, but why wouldn't someone try that in order to create a buzz around their work. Thanks for bringing this up, I guess that means view statistics should be viewed with a grain of salt.
View counters like that are extremely easy to manipulate and so would be the ones counting unique views. Anybody who might be getting flack for posting a lot of low quality content for big rewards might have an incentive to bloat that metric, so they might appear to be adding "surprisingly high" value to the blockchain. I think it's extremely likely to have posts like that on here already as building the required app is really easy even for people with very low levels of technical skills.
So the conclusion that he's bringing a lot of views to the steemit blockchain remains questionable.
Yeah, give a blog a refresh (or 3) and see what happens.
I think also that there is no central store on the Blockchain of viewer count across the web front end applications (eSteem, busy.org, etc) and so the numbers become even more skewed when you factor this in.
I suspect it's already happening in some cases....
cheers!
Very cool! Thanks for putting this together. I was really surprised to see @haejin generating so many views. From an investor standpoint, maybe the rewards he's been receiving might actually have some justifications? Or, to think about it another way, do his rewards generate the amount of views he gets? I'd love to see @steemit chime in with some more detailed analytics in the future.
Very cool to see two of my posts made the list. In both cases, they were things which I thought would be really valuable to a wider audience outside of Steemit. I'm glad to see so many people benefitted from those posts. :)
Thanks for reading! I was also surprised to see @haejin dominating the list. I'm sure some of those are just related to the overall controversy surrounding him, but I think he probably is actually generating a good deal of traffic aside from that just by how dominating he is in the list. I'm planning to start calculating a metric for different authors of average number of views per dollar of rewards, and I have a feeling he will have a surprisingly high metric. I'll be sure to throw you into the calculation just to satisfy your curiosity! :)
I'd say we shouldn't exclude the possibility that those views are bloated with view bots just to give him an additional layer of credibility, so his defenders might have a number to point to or for us to be having this conversation about how surprised we are that he is bringing in value. Those views would be super easy to manipulate.
I would love to be 'thrown' into the mix too at some point for my weekly contest whom @lukestokes was 'introduced' to last week when we hit top numbers again for the day on comments (3 weeks running) Most number of comments for a newbie? What would be the classification of a newbie however as I am 5 months in. Statistics are SOOooo interesting till now I was under the impression it was only @arcange doing it. Nice one bud, very interesting indeed and thanks a ton.. Cheer$;)
I've always viewed you as a top 100 steemian and I am glad to see the numbers back it up.
I wonder what a list of the most views/least amount of reward per view would look like. MIght be a decent way to find some truly underappreciated authors.
Hey thanks for reading! Not sure I deserve your compliment, I wish I had some more free time to work on posts, etc... But anyway, great minds think alike, because what you mentioned is exactly on the docket for my next post! :) I have been curious for awhile to calculate views per reward to identify underappreciated authors, I'm just not sure exactly what criteria to simplify the search for. For example, for this post I only searched posts with more than 50 comments or more than 50 votes, just because it takes so long to crawl the different pages. So if you have any suggestions for how to simplify the search for underappreciated authors that would be helpful! For example only authors with more than 20 posts, etc...
What a great bit of interesting research and it surely makes great reading but its so sad they are almost all about Crypto. This community is about so much more.
It would be perhaps more pertinent if we could have a league table of the top 100 posts based on time spent viewing as opposed to just views.
Very interesting but a little saddened!
Regards
That would be interesting to add, unfortunately I have no idea how to figure out time spent viewing :)
Thanks for the information @trogdor! I can't wait to go through all of these!
No problem, thanks for reading :)
No problem. Glad to see you make it on the list as well :) I can easily see you making more top posts in the future!
woow Very interesting information. This is the first time I see such an activity at steemit. It's really a very successful work. The list clearly shows @haejin hegemony. Though content and sharing deserve it. Thank you very much for informing us about this. @trogdor
Thanks for reading!
wait a minute? my name should be here! hhahaha :D now i know most of the successful articles has crypto topic on it.. need to make quality post now so i can see my name there.. thanks for this @trogdor your the best! :')
Thanks for reading!
