Christian vigilance: Be alert, because you don't know when the owner of the house will return. Mark 13:35
The Gospel of Mark recounts that Jesus had finally arrived from the regions of Samaria and Galilee to his destination, the holy city of Jerusalem, the city where he knew his trial and condemnation at the hands of Pontius Pilate would take place.
And it was in this city that Jesus left his last teachings to prepare the disciples for the times that would come after his death and resurrection; the holy spirit and his form of love, agape, had not yet descended upon them, and many of Jesus' teachings were not correctly understood.
After visiting the temple in the holy city of Jerusalem, the divine master announced to his disciples its destruction, which would occur many years later during the reign of Emperor Vespasian. And Jesus went further, when he explained to the disciples that difficult times would come, he told them that false teachers, that is, heretics, would come, and deceive many with their cunning, and that they would be persecuted for living their faith.
Therefore, in response to this, Jesus exhorted his followers to vigilance and steadfastness in faith with these wise words: "Be careful! Watch! You don't know the exact time. It is like a man who went on a trip. As he left home, he put his servants in charge. He assigned work to each one and ordered the guard to be alert. Therefore, be alert, because you don't know when the owner of the house will return. It could be in the evening or at midnight or at dawn or in the morning." Mark 13:33-35.
With this story, Jesus highlighted the importance of knowing how to spiritually discern the times. Jesus spoke in a very subtle way about his second coming to the world after his resurrection, and Christian vigilance is a virtue that should accompany faith, he who lives distracted by worldly things, such as lust or money, cannot serve Christ. Anyone who decides to follow Christ through a sincere conversion must accept the spiritual battle, every Christian must live prepared to receive Jesus, just as the servants must wait for their master in the parable.
