I'm still new and inexperienced, so my knowledge is limited; however, the main takeaway from my first two days on Steemit is that it is possible to add value to the community from the start through thoughtful comments and discussion, and to start building up some Steem pretty quickly that way. Don't spam, don't be deceitful, don't beg; none of those are productive.
