The 120 Year, & Counting, War. Part 2.
World War II (1937–1945) as the Climax & Reset.

Asia-Pacific War (1937–1945): Begins with Japan's invasion of China (1937), which is a direct heir to the 1895-1905 imperial pathway. Japan wants what Britain and the U.S. have.
European Theater (1939–1945): Germany's Lebensraum, (Living Space) is a brutal, accelerated version of 1898-era colonialism turned inward on Europe.
The "Good War" Paradox: The Allies defeat fascism, but immediately resume colonial wars (France in Indochina, Britain in Malaya, Netherlands in Indonesia). The U.N. system is built by imperial powers, for imperial powers.

WW2 destroys the old European empires but transfers their logic to two new hegemons: the U.S. (naval/air/economic) and the USSR (land/ideological). The Bank of London's power is now permanently transferred to the Federal Reserve and Bretton Woods.

The Cold War: A Single Global Counter-Insurgency (1947–1991).

This is where the "Hundred Years' War" framework shines. Every "police action" or "proxy war" is the same conflict: maintaining a global hierarchy (now NATO-led) against revolutionary nationalism.

Korea (1950–1953): First major hot war of the Cold War. A "police action" (no Congressional declaration) that killed 2.5 million civilians. The template: intervention under U.N. flag, massive aerial bombing, permanent division.
Vietnam (1955–1975): Direct continuation of French colonial war (1946–1954), which was itself a continuation of WW2's anti-Japanese resistance. The U.S. fights to prevent "falling dominoes", i.e., to keep the global south open for capitalist extraction.
Indonesian Massacres (1965–1966): CIA-backed army kills 500,000+ alleged communists. A "police action" to secure a resource-rich archipelago (oil, rubber, tin) for Western investment. Direct line from 1898's Philippines.
East Timor (1975–1999): Indonesian invasion, U.S.-armed, killing 200,000. Another resource war (Timor Gap oil/gas).

Colombia (1999–present): "Plan Colombia" as a drug war, but really a counter-insurgency to protect pipelines and mining. The Banana Wars never ended; they just switched crops.

Libya (2011): NATO intervention under "Responsibility to Protect," leading to state collapse, slave markets, and a decade of civil war. The same logic as 1898's Cuba: humanitarian rhetoric, geopolitical reality.

Central American Wars (1970s–1990s): Guatemala (1954 coup), Nicaragua (Contras), El Salvador (death squads), Honduras (training camps). These are not separate wars; they are the U.S. re-fighting the 1898 Banana Wars, this time through CIA proxies and "low-intensity conflict" doctrine.
Angola (1975–2002): Cuba vs. South Africa vs. the U.S. vs. the USSR. This is the Boer War reversed, now Africa is the chessboard for superpowers, but the goal, control of oil, diamonds, and strategic ports, is identical to 1898.

Here's how the Iran–Iraq War fits into your 1898–present timeline, between existing events you've named:

1979: Iranian Revolution (overthrows U.S.-backed Shah). U.S. Embassy hostage crisis (444 days).
1980–1988: Iran–Iraq War ← Insert here
1982–1984: U.S. tilts openly to Iraq (removes from terror list, provides intel)
1985–1986: Iran–Contra scandal (U.S. arms Iran secretly)
1988: Saddam uses chemical weapons against Kurds (Halabja, Anfal campaign). No U.S. response.
1990–1991: Gulf War (Saddam invades Kuwait; U.S. turns on its former client)
2003: Iraq War (U.S. invades, topples Saddam, then spends years fighting Iranian-backed militias — the same Iran the U.S. fought in 1980–1988)

The Core Insight for Your Framework

The Iran–Iraq War demonstrates the third stage of Anglo-American imperial method:

Stage 1 (1898–1945): Direct colonial rule (Philippines, India, Africa)
Stage 2 (1947–1979): Proxy war vs. the USSR (Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan)

Stage 3 (1980 to present). Proxy war where both sides are proxies of the same imperial center, the U.S. fights Iran by arming Iraq, then secretly arms Iran to keep the war going, then destroys Iraq (1991, 2003) & re-arms Iran (2015 nuclear deal) as the geopolitical winds shift.

This isn't madness. It's a system designed to ensure that no single regional power ever emerges. The Persian Gulf, containing the world's largest oil reserves, remains permanently divided, dependent on U.S. naval power (5th Fleet, Bahrain), & incapable of acting as a unified bloc.

Divide & rule, the oldest British imperial tactic, updated for the oil age.

Yugoslav Wars (1991–2001). The last act of Cold War collapse. NATO's first "humanitarian" war (Bosnia, then Kosovo) establishes a new doctrine, intervention without U.N. mandate, for a "rules-based order."

Every Vietnam is a replay of the Boer War. Every Contra is a replay of the Philippine Insurrection (1899–1902). The technology changes; the logic of imperial management does not.

The Unipolar Era (1991–2021). The "End of History" as War.

Gulf War (1990–1991). Ostensibly to liberate Kuwait. But it's about oil and the U.S.-led order replacing British imperial protection of Gulf monarchies. The U.S. permanently stations troops in Saudi Arabia, a direct line back to 1898's Cuba protectorate.
Afghanistan (2001–2021). The longest war in U.S. history. A direct sequel to the 1979–1989 Soviet-Afghan War, which was itself a sequel to the 19th-century Great Game (Britain vs. Russia). The same terrain, same tribal dynamics, same impossibility of conquest.
Iraq War (2003–2011). A war of choice, based on the "Bush Doctrine" of preemptive intervention. This is 1898's "splendid little war" updated with shock & awe. Goal, control Mesopotamian oil & establish a compliant client state.
Drone Wars (2004 to present). Yemen, Somalia, Pakistan, Libya. "Police actions" conducted by remote control. No congressional declarations, no front lines, no end. The purest expression of the 1898 model, a permanent state of low-intensity imperial management.
