RE: Tornado Siren Testing to Begin March 20

in #weather8 years ago

Must be a lot of work to create a tornado every second monday. May be you should rather sound the siren when there is threatening weather (like a tornado) already. That way you could do two jobs in one. :)

And this dispatch - is that the same one where you work? Must be tempting to see this button, when you have to work sunday morning 5am - while all the other people sleep... :)

Sort:

No, not tempting at all--I don't want to field all those angry phone calls!

Well, it may not be helpful in regard of your career. But it could be satisfying in a twisted way. :)
And its still not as bad as activating the air raid warning system for the Hawaiian Islands, as someone did "accidently" a little while ago. Just when Kim Jong Un was testing some new rockets - what a coincidence...

Yeah, that's been investigated pretty thoroughly at this point, and it seems like a case of somebody at the controls just not paying good enough attention, combined with paranoia over what North Korea might do next. I've always felt that kind of screw up is what's going to cause a nuclear war, rather than a deliberate attack.
We actually did have a dispatcher once accidentally trigger the tornado sirens; luckily for her it was the middle of the day, which cut down on the anger, but it's not the kind of mistake you want to make!

Well, I hope the red button that launches the nuclear retaliation is secured a bit better...
But even the air raid alert is a serious thing. If the people think its a real alert it will cause widespread panic, with people possibly die from heart attacks, car accidents and whatever. That is quiet a different league than annoying people on a sunday morning. :)

But perhaps you should secure this tornado siren button better, like using a key switch or something instead of a simple button. Because, as a saying we have here goes, only people who dont work dont make mistakes. ;)

Not to worry--I've been here 26 years, and only once has a tornado siren been accidentally activated. Like the air raid button, it's not as easy to do as one accident would make it seem. And the really good news is that there is no actual red button!
