Wednesday Walk: Tardy Edition Fortuna Wash

in #wednesdaywalk7 years ago

About once a week Sam and I go for a drive and walk. He’s really good in the car, loves to go, and loves to find new places to mark and smell. This is a spot that's relatively near, but Sam loves to get in and out of the car so it's 'special'

This is in response to a Challenge by @tattoodjay to take photographs of things on a walk. Things you don’t normally see. I really like the challenge and the challenger so here I am again.

Main Wash Southresized.jpg

This is Fortuna Wash. It's a distinct feature of the area I live in. It looks dry and harmless, but it is a serious flash flood channel. When we get a big rain (usually in summer) this section right here will flow bank to bank about 2 feet deep. It drains an incredibly large area that is rocky and very hard where most of the rainfall runs off.

Sun Up Samresize.jpg

There was really a lot to see and smell on this walk so Sam stayed pretty close by. This is a channel off the main wash that we chose to walk in. It's still pretty good sized and mostly easy walking.

Daturaresize.jpg

Due to the recent rains we had lots more flora than you would normally find in the Wash. Not the least of which is the Datura that was in quite a few spots. You might know it as Jimsonweed, but to the Navajo it is Sacred Datura.

Cel Tower resize.jpg

This is pretty typical of the vegetation in the channel we were in, except for the palm tree. If you look closely you can see that it's actually a cel tower :) Actually pretty clever, it's on the edge of a golf course and insures good phone service in the neighborhood.

Sam Heads outresize.jpg

This is a really normal pace for Sam. He gets a scent of something interesting and he heads out at a pace. I never know what he's after and why he does or doesn't continue. It's not my job obviously.

Brushy Sun Up resize.jpg

There are places, particularly near the golf course that are pretty thick brush. You wouldn't want to go through there for any reason. That is sharp and stickery.

Main Wash Housingresize.jpg

It's really a pretty cool area to walk, and obviously there is a lot of 'off road' traffic. The whole wash is really a pretty premium address, you get really good views of the mountains and no neighbors behind you. The drawback is the occasional snake, but most of them aren't right on the wash because of the bank system.

But this is really about our walk, the #wednesdaywalk. I really do enjoy this challenge and am grateful to @tattoodjay for sponsoring it.

I just saw one of those towers a year or two ago near where my inlaws live. Theirs was shaped like a pine tree. It is pretty amazing what they are doing these days to try to make them not stick out as much and blend in more with the natural surroundings. Put one of those in among some other pine trees and you would probably never know the difference. That is cool about the wash, would be interesting to see pictures when it is full. How quickly does it drain after a hard rain?

It comes and goes relatively quickly. It's a flash flood area. I'll try to get some pics the next time it flows, it's just awesome.

Wow, Great photography. I like that. I appreciate your collection. Thank sir.

Thank you for stopping by.

Sam looks like he is enjoying himself there! Watch out for those snakes though Sam!

The snakes seem to have gone to bed for the winter. I haven't seen a reptile track on the desert this week. Insect and mammal tracks, but no lizards or snakes. Sam always enjoys himself when he's out and about.

Such an interesting area such contrasts when it rains by the sound

thanks for joining Wednesday Walk !tip

I've seen this wash and others flowing full when there hasn't been any rain locally. Those mountains off to the east all end up draining here so it can be wet washes and dry ground beside it.

Dont you just have to respect the power of Nature, that must be such a sight to see

I missed Sam in the pictures , I pressume he or she is a dog so enrole him or her in the #dogsofsteemit by @supernovastaffy and meet other steemdogs. We have two setters I nlog about them regularly.
Have a great saturday

That's a really good idea. Sam shows up in a post at least once a week... Here is my current favorite photo of him.
