My Activetostayfit Report Card: December 25 2018

Generally, fitness can be broken down into 5 categories.
Cardiovascular endurance
Muscle strength
Muscle endurance
Flexibility/Mobility
Body composition

Just looking at this fellow, you might think that he is as fit as one could possible be.
Well, I figure a guy like this has at least 2 of the 5 components of fitness covered, Muscle strength and Body composition.
Question is, can he touch his toes or even scratch the back of his neck?
Can he jog around the block?

I have no doubt that this guy could throw a car over his shoulder, and walk down the street, but is he fit?

People have different reason for accentuating one component of physical fitness or another.

To be truly physical fit, requires one to exercise in such a way that all five components of fitness are covered.
Why not enjoy covering each component of fitness in your daily activities.
Becoming fit will be fun, and not something you view as work.
In my book, working out while completing a chore, or participating in an enjoyable activity accomplishes the goal of getting fit, or staying fit.
Makes sense to me for a lot of reasons.
Getting something done becomes a byproduct of your efforts.
You can have fun while exercising.
You can save some money on a gym membership, and the multitude of apparatuses one can purchase for using in the home.
I know we are just talking about physical fitness, but mentally, don't we all feel pretty good about ✔✔✔ off items on our to do list.

With no disrespect to anyone with a gym membership, or a workout room in their home, I am just pointing out another option to staying fit that works for me.

My Activitytostayfit Report Card : December 25 2018.

Walking with a purpose
I love walking when a fresh layer of snow covers the landscape.
It's a great time to see what critters have meandered about, with the only traces of their activity being left in the fresh fallen snow, deer tracks

Checking on the trail-cam for activity that I may have caught on camera.

On my way to locate some standing dead wood that I may have to add to my stock pile of firewood for this year.

IMG_2169.JPG

I was not expecting to have to gather any more wood for this burning season, but s--t happens.
How does the old saying go, The Best laid Plans of Mice and Men Often Goes Astray.
We may be spending February at the farm instead of Florida, therefore we may need another cord of wood.

There she is, standing deadwood, already seasoned and ready to supply some physical fitness activities.

As I arrived at the tree I noticed all the coloring on the old tree that has taken place over time.
Despite this old White trash being so big I will only be able to get 1/3 of what I will need.

IMG_2173.JPG

The colors that you see in this dead tree will have worked their way through the entire piece.
With this being the case I will save a good portion of the tree to mill, and use for future furniture building projects.
This is a picture of the family sawmill, with my son@ryan313 at the helm.

The color changes that occur are created due to the decaying process.
The secret to gathering wood like this is to collect it before it decays to the point where the structural integrity is compromised.
IMG_2174.JPG

No problem, I know of a couple other places where wood has been down for awhile, and can be used this year.
Another dead White Ash

IMG_2178.JPG

This downed Hard Maple Tree should provide me with the remainder of the wood I need.

I have worked my way back out to the road for a little power walking.
Power walking is a great term to use for those on us who just can't run any longer.
Will head home for a brief stop to check on the fire and down some water, and then resume activities.
IMG_2179.JPG

Following my break which lasted about 15 minutes or so, I arrived at this intersection which is exactly 1.3 miles from the corner in the previous picture.
Being that I wanted to break a little bit of a sweat, I did't take any pictures on this part of the walk. On the way home I hope to spot something of interest, and stop to photograph.

Time to start heading home.

On my way home, an unusual color for this time of year caught my eye, RED.
This stream is not on my property, but is one I enjoy with regularity.

IMG_2187.JPG

The practice of gutting and skinning a deer, and leaving the remains in the woods is a common practice.
Throwing the Caracas in a stream is not, and is something that infuriates me.
Within a week or so, a Caracas left in the woods will be eaten clean by other wildlife in this area.
Look closely and you will see a Black Capped Chickadee pecking at the remains.

When I said that I hoped to find something interesting, this was not what was intended.
Time to return home.

Returning home following my walk I know that I have successfully ✔✔✔all the boxes for today for the 5 categories of fitness .

Exercise of any fashion is always a good thing, but a well rounded regiment is something we should all consider.

Exercising in a way that also provides pleasure, is a regiment that one is more prone to do with greater regularity.

Hope you enjoted! thebigsweed

What an adventure. This is the lifestyle I imagine when I am able to buy myself a chunk of forest and real country life. I am dedicated to staying active and progressing no matter my age and lifestyle.

Why someone would throw that carcass in the water we will never know.

The key for me to being able to live in the country was purchasing a piece of property early on.
The property sat for 10 years prior to me building a house on it.
I took a note on the property for 10 years and after that I had the money to build.
Starting early was the key for us.

howdy sir bigsweed! that's a great lifestyle there, will keep you in great shape for the rest of your life if you don't get lazy! lol. Great job on the post, very educational and I saw the picture of your son and found out that the family business is a saw mill, excellent! Tons of great pictures here too.
