Yes, this episode represents a striking convergence in the long arc of U.S.-led, & British-backed power projection since 1898. It blends familiar patterns, great-power competition over spheres of influence, regime-change dynamics (or perceptions thereof), forward military posture/alliances, and blowback/resistance from a rival power. Russia’s perspective frames the Maidan events and NATO’s eastward growth as the latest chapter in Western encroachment, closing a circle from American overseas imperialism to post-Cold War unipolar management of Europe’s security architecture.

Core Events: 2013–2022 and Beyond.
Maidan Revolution (Euromaidan/Revolution of Dignity, U.S. financed coup, 2013–2014). Protests erupted after President Viktor Yanukovych rejected an EU association agreement in favor of Russian economic ties. Demonstrations turned deadly, Yanukovych fled to Russia, and a pro-Western government took power. Russia viewed this as a U.S./Western-orchestrated "coup," (citing Victoria Nuland’s involvement, leaked calls, and prior U.S. democracy aid totaling billions over years). Western accounts emphasize genuine popular uprising against corruption and Russian influence.
You decide. Regardless of the narrative, the “War” that began in Havana Harbor in 1898, continues.

Immediate Russian Response. Annexation of Crimea (2014, by referendum), and support for Donbas separatists, kicking off the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war.
2022 Full-Scale Invasion ("Special Military Operation"). Russia cited NATO expansion, "denazification," protection of Russian-speakers, and prevention of Ukraine as an anti-Russian outpost.

As of mid-2026, the conflict remains a grinding war of attrition with Russia holding about 20% of Ukraine, massive casualties, and ongoing Ukrainian strikes deep into Russia alongside Russian aerial campaigns.

By the time we publish this, the Special Military Operation may be over. It could be over because Ukraine surrendered, or because the SMO was upgraded to a war.

The European Commissioners are very clear about their intentions to destroy Russia. What they are ambiguous about is their motivation. Before Maidan, (2014) there was no Russian threat. But there is now. But that’s analysis that we are not getting into.
