Should I buy 2 or 3 bundles for a sew-in?

Based on my own experience, I only truly understood the difference between 2 and 3 bundles after making a mistake.

The first time I got a sew-in, to save money and because I didn't want an overly dramatic look, I bought only 2 bundles. I chose 18-inch body wave hair. For the first few days, honestly, it looked quite natural from the front and didn't look fake. But the real problem only became apparent after about a week. After washing my hair and doing some simple styling, I noticed the ends started to look thin, especially on the sides and the back of my head. When I lowered my head or the wind blew, the thinness of the hair was very noticeable. That's when I realized it wasn't a problem with the technique but simply that there wasn't enough hair.

The second time I got a sew-in, I learned my lesson and bought 3 bundles, still 18 inches long, but the difference in effect was very significant. When it was first installed, the overall look was much more even, with consistent thickness from root to tip, without the "full on top, sparse at the bottom" look. More importantly, as time went on, even if some hair fell out and the curls weren't as fresh, the overall style still held up and didn't look old quickly.

Later, I tried lengths longer than 20 inches, and using only 2 bundles was basically impossible. With longer hair, the ends require a lot more volume, and 3 bundles are necessary to ensure it doesn't look like "thin strands." This is especially true for straight or slightly wavy hair; one less bundle makes a huge difference.

Of course, that doesn't mean 2 human hair bundles are completely unusable. Once, I helped a friend choose hair; she had a smaller head and preferred a subtle, natural style, and she got a sew-in of about 14 inches. In that case, 2 bundles were perfectly sufficient, and the result was very light and easy to manage daily. That made me even more certain that more isn't always better; it depends on individual needs.

So, based on my own experience, if it's your first time getting a sew-in, or if you're like me and want a natural look without regretting it after a week or two, 3 bundles will give you more peace of mind. If you're absolutely sure you want something lightweight, suitable for everyday wear, and not too long, then two bundles are perfectly fine. What's truly important isn't how many bundles you buy, but buying the right ones and using them correctly.
