Amazing Wildlife Park

The East Coast Nature World is a fantastic wildlife park and a must do when on the East Coast of Tasmania. I know there are so many amazing places to visit on the East Coast of Tasmania but don’t leave this one off your list. Situated on the Tasman Highway less than 10mins out of the Bicheno township it is easy to get to and well sign posted, you won’t miss it.
Here is why I think make East Coast Nature World a must do on you East Coast trip.

● Built on 150 acres of park land and lagoon
This point really speaks for itself. The park has a great outlook over the lagoon and extends well beyond main part of the park. Taking you away from the enclosures and busy part of the park on a Nature walk were many wild native birds can be spotted as you work your way through the trees and alongside a stream. It is easy to forget you are in a wildlife park while in this part of the park.

● free roaming animals and large enclosures that you can enter
Forester Kangaroo, Cape Barren Geese, black swans and other water fowl free roam the park. Though the black swans and some of the geese have attitude on the most part these animals are very friendly and can be hand fed the food bought for $1 a bag. Other smaller Macropods are in large enclosures that you are able to walk through and some even have picnic facilities within them.

● nocturnal room!
Have you every been to a wildlife park and the enclosure marked “brushtail possum” is like trying to find wally in a where's wally book? Then when you finally do spot it you only see that brush tail hanging out of a nesting box. Sure, spotting the animal can be half the fun, particularly with kids but when it’s sleeping out of sight it can be a real anticlimactic. This is the reason that a nocturnal room is a great asset to a wildlife park. With the room set on a 12-hour time delay (day is night and night is day) you are able to see their adorable white brushtail possum and cute little sugar gliders up and active.

● new quoll enclosures
Another nocturnal animal you usually have similar trouble spotting at wildlife parks are the quolls. Thank fully The Nature World has recently (since my last visit) built a number of large Quoll enclosers. One of them was so large that it had a whole tree in it!
The Nature World is part of a Quoll breeding program and as a result has had an increase in the number of Quolls living there. With these numbers up (I think there was 12 enclosures) and the fact that they have a day time feed and talk means your chance of seeing one of these beautiful little creatures is greatly increased. We missed this talk but even showing up after it had finished there was still Quolls out finishing of their food or wondering about before settling down for their afternoon snooze. We saw 5 that were up and about and one tail hanging out of a nesting box. As one of our favourites to see we were very pleased!

● reptile pits
O.K. so to some people snakes might be considered a down fall rather than a bonus but even if you don’t like snakes the education and viewing could be just what you need to start pushing through those fears but If they really just aren’t for you then they are easily avoidable.
Personally, I love reptiles and the first time I went there I was so excited by the Blue Tongue skink and snake enclosures which hosted large number of reptiles. The park seems to have reduced these numbers somewhat but we were still able to see four tiger snakes and five Blotched Blue Tongue Skinks. They are however outside and therefore dependent on good weather (for warmth) to be out and therefore for you to see them. Though each time I have gone they have had a large tank with young blue tongue skinks in it near reception so I presume this is a usual thing.

● wheelchair accessible
The Nature World has quality, well maintained paths that are reasonably level. They would be relatively easy to push wheelchairs and prams on. Though perhaps not on practically wet days but who wants to go to a wildlife park on a wet day anyway

● devil world
The famous Tasmanian Devil!
Everyone loves the Tasmanian Devil, tourists and locals alike and The Nature World doesn’t disappoint. With their numerous enclosures, windows into the indoor sleeping quarters and daily feeding/educational talks you are certain to get your devil fix while you’re here.

● rehabilitation and conservation
So we all love going to see all the animals and the looks on children’s and tourists faces when they see/touch a particular animal for the first time but what is more important than all that is that wildlife parks, not Just the East Coast Nature World, are helping rehabilitate injured wildlife or homing those that can’t return to the wild and putting a heroic effort into breeding programs for endangered animals such as the Tasmanian Devil and Quoll. Our admittance fee helps make this possible and leaves me feeling good, for doing my small part, when I visit these places.

The only negative thing I have to say about any of my experiences there (I think I have been 5 times now) was on this last trip the café staff were quite abrupt and rude to my wife and I. When we had lunch together there they were just straight faced and lacked personality and when I left my wife to have a drink while I took a few more photos (I can be hard to get out of places like this once I’m in) they were rude to her when she tried to order more food. Perhaps they were just having a bad day, we all do, as we hadn’t had this trouble in the past. At any rate it the food was still good and I would not let it ruin the whole experience.
