Of this we are at each minute conscious. However, the methods, by which this is effected, the vitality by which the will performs so remarkable operation, of this we are so distant from being promptly conscious, that it must for ever get away from our most industrious request.

Is there any standard in all nature more secretive than the union of soul with body, by which a gathered spiritual substance gets such an impact over a material, that the most refined idea can actuate the grossest matter? Were we empowered, by a mystery wish, to expel mountains, or control the planets in their orbit, this broad specialist would not be more phenomenal, nor more outside our ability to understand.

In any case, if by consciousness we saw any power in the will, we should know this power, we should know its association with the effect, we should know the mystery union of soul and body, and the nature of both these substances, by which the one can operate, in such a large number of occasions, upon the other.

We are not ready to move every one of the organs of the body with a like expert, however we can't allocate any reason other than experience, for so amazing a contrast in the vicinity of one and the other. Why has the will an impact over the tongue and fingers, not over the heart or liver?
