The guidelines of wise people

Yesterday, I went to stay over in a friends house, and when it was the time for their quiet time, I decided to join them.

The mother of my friend lead the prayers, but before that, her father gave a speech which he titled "the guidelines of wise people", and I really learnt from what he said, so I have decided to share it.

He started by explaining that wise men have a non-specific principles which provides a direction to their behavior, and before someone can be considered to be wise, he or she should have some characteristics. He shared some of them.

The first is to think before writing
In this context, he went the literary way by talking about students who during an exam would be required to think about a perfect answer before picking up their pen to write what they think is right.

According to him, someone who sees a question and starts writing without taking time to think would probably make some mistakes.

The next is to listen before speaking
He explained that apart from the fact that listening before speaking would give someone the time to think and give a meaningful reply, it would also give the opportunity to be able to be thoughtful and discern if what the reporter is saying is right or wrong.

Then to earn before spending
He explained that when one does not earn money, he would spend all he gets anyhow, but when one toils hard, he would make sure he spends the money wisely.

Investigate before deciding
I can remember that he used the illustration of William Shakespeare's Othello... how Othello killed his wife, Desdemona without investigating if his informant, Iago was right or wrong.

Forgive before praying
Someone who does not forgive others, but then decides to pray is just wasting his time as it is mandatory to forgive first before praying.

To save before retiring
He mentioned the fact that it would not be wise to retire while having nothing saved as it is a very bad decision which no one should consider.

To try before quitting
A lot of people get scared and don't bother to try doing the needed task at all which is wrong. It is better to try as at the end of the day, you would have a 50 percent assurance of being successful, which is definitely more than the zero you would get if you quit.

To repent before one dies
He said here that it would be better to repent before death, but then, no one knows when he or she would die, so the best time to repent is now!
