The Nu-Century of Self
Adam Curtis's 2002 documentary series, The Century of the Self, argues that the twentieth century saw the rise of a new kind of political and economic power, one focused on controlling and manipulating the inner desires of the public. The series traces this phenomenon back to the ideas of Sigmund Freud and, more importantly, the work of his American nephew, Edward Bernays.

The central thesis is that Bernays, in the 1920s, was the first to apply Freud's theories of the unconscious to mass manipulation. He invented the modern public relations industry by shifting American culture from one based on "needs" to one based on "desires" . His goal was to control the "dangerous crowd" in a mass democracy by satisfying their inner irrational desires, making them happy, docile consumers.

In the end, Curtis concludes that while we believe we are free individuals, we have become "slaves to our own desires." The very techniques designed to liberate the self have been used to create a new, more subtle form of control, where our inner feelings are the primary target of those in power.
Welcome to the 21st Century, a quarter century, late but still. Here we are. This is the Nu- (en you) Century of “Self”. Self care. Self reliance. Self discipline. Self accountability. This century is about reclaiming everything that was relinquished in the last century as human pursued there “hidden desires,” pet rocks, hula hoops, frisbees, and “klackers.” Everything a generation abundant in “disposable” income could want. For a week. A weekend. Or an hour.

This century is about being, more than “having.”
In the last millennium the altar was competative consumption. We were told fulfillment was in keeping up with the Joneses and later the Kardashians. Culture was transaction, that happiness could be financed. "Have more," they whispered. We were even encouraged to repeat such mantras in our sleep. "Have the car, the brand, the sale-priced trinket bought on credit. Have it now, and you will be whole."
We have moved beyond broken promises of instant gratification. Purchases made on a whim, and discarded before it’s paid for. Look where that gospel led us. It led us to blame the boss, the government, our parents, anyone but the face in the mirror. We outsourced our power to gurus with perfect teeth and fake motivational quotes, paying them to tell us we were enough, while their message made us feel we weren't.

That era is over. The 21st century isn't about “having”; it is about “being”. It is the great shift from accumulation to authenticity. To be self-sustainable. If you like such buzz-words. To “be” the author of your own story. Creating your own illustrated characters instead of cos-playing and showing up to Comic-con with a a hundred other Mr. Spocks. It means smashing the idols of manufactured inspiration and realizing the only guru who can save you is staring back at you in the black mirror.

It means killing the victim inside. And letting someone new blossom. When you stop blaming others, you take back your pen. You stop renting your power and own it outright. It’s not about what you own. It's about who you “are”. And facing it. The revolution is not in your wallet. It is in your soul. Stop having. Start being. The work starts now.
Kudos to everyone who has realized that and is moving forward with gusto. Encouragement to those who are still struggling. A metaphysical hand is there to help. Grab it.
