NOBLEWITNESS UPDATE - 3 September 2018

Another week down, another witness update from the @noblewitness team! Thank you to everyone voting for us. We will continue to earn your votes!

Server Status

Since we upgraded our servers to 19.12, everything has been running smoothly. We haven’t missed any blocks, and our price feed is up-to-date and refreshing consistently. We have a solid failover system in place to ensure that, if one of our servers drops the ball, our signing key will automatically switch over to the other.

With the new Hardfork 20 Test Net up and running, we are considering using our back up server to run a p2p node for the test net. With HF20 on the horizon, setting up a server to connect to the test net will provide invaluable experience with updating our main node.
Current Projects

Steem Creatives Toronto - We’ve been hyping our involvement in Toronto for some time now, and we’re very excited to say the time is finally here! We are going to be unveiling Wordrow at Toronto, with @rhondak and @gmuxx representing not just our team, but The Writer’s Block as well!

Steemfiesta Peru - @sircork is going down to South America to represent the @noblewitness team in Peru. He’s peerless when it comes to marketing and branding, so we expect great things from him going down there. It’s also going to be a great opportunity for him to expand YouAreHope operations in that corner of the globe.

Steemfest Poland - It’s still a little ways away, but our tried and true @gmuxx is going to be representing the witness team at Steemfest. With a little luck, @rhondak will be accompanying him on the trip as well.
Closing Thoughts

Recently, we stumbled across a post talking about so-called common sense solutions to bidbots and witness being overpaid. The proposals involved banning accounts and instituting arbitration by conscripting users for jury duty.

That last line doesn’t need much explanation as to why it’s a horrible idea, but this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this kind of talk being floated. Unfortunately, it comes from a place of ignorance of how the blockchain works. Bidbots are just accounts that run scripts. They are no different than any other account, and any human being could do what bidbots do (albeit more slowly and within a smaller scope). Getting rid of them is a task in futility, and there’s no way to hardcode around them.

Which brings us back around to the idea of banning accounts. Sure, it sounds like a great idea at first. Who hasn’t thought about banning abusive accounts before? The problem, however, is that it would require accessing the keys to a user’s wallet. The only way to hardcode that kind of access for anyone is to duplicate wallet keys. Duplicate the wallet keys, and it’s not hard to see Steemit collapsing, as well as damaging the reputation of the Steem blockchain.

Since these ideas seem to continue to crop up (much like Marxism and its stable of idiot-children), we may start addressing them in turn in separate posts. After all, it’s never a bad time to explain why bad ideas are bad, right?

Follow @noblewitness to stay updated to our progress, and vote for our witness if you support our projects and our mission. We will strive to earn the votes you give us!

Who wrote that "common sense solutions" post?

Quillfire. It's a great series of observations followed by absolute garbage suggestions.

I guess I'll do some further readings and write about it at some point.
