The embodiment of Wisdom: The Word was in the world, and though God made the world through him, yet the world did not recognize him. John 1:10
The Gospel of John begins its narrative by describing Jesus in a metaphorical way. The Gospel of John does not claim that Jesus is God, but it does suggest that Jesus is the very personification of the Word of God. And the Gospel of John relates in a figurative way that this word of God descended into the world, or rather became flesh, in a person; and that this word is the very light for the intelligence of man, and with these words the Gospel of John describes this spiritual teaching: "The real light, which shines on everyone, was coming into the world" John 1:9.
In simpler terms, for John, Jesus is the embodiment of God's creative wisdom, because the word of God is also his wisdom itself. This literary device, that of writing about a personification of wisdom, comes from the Old Testament and more precisely from the Book of Proverbs, which refers to a personified wisdom that calls men at the beginning of the book.
And then the evangelist John states something more: that this personified wisdom was not recognized by his children. It is likely that here the evangelist is referring to the fact that many of Abraham's children did not recognize Jesus as the expected Messiah, and with these words, John wrote about this fact: "The Word was in the world, and though God made the world through him, yet the world did not recognize him" John 1:10.
But then he affirms something more: the Gospel, when speaking of this personified wisdom, says that those who believed in his name, that is, those who recognized Jesus as savior and Messiah, were given the blessing of attaining likeness to God in essence; and here the evangelist probably refers to Pentecost and the Holy Spirit as the inner teacher for christians with his gifts to spiritually transform the life of believers, and thus he expressed this spiritual fact: "To those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" John 1:12.
With these words, the evangelist then showed Jesus as the light, the word, the wisdom, and the door to a new life, the contemplative life, the true spiritual life for man.
