Clearly defining your position.

Clearly defining your position on something is important, at the very least, for your own conscience, so you don't consider yourself a liar, or at the very least, a slippery person who says one thing and does another.

There are plenty of examples of this, worth checking yourself.

For example, many poultry farmers can talk admiringly about how smart and courageous chickens are, even though they greatly respect these birds and consider them their friends. But, ultimately, these friends will sooner or later end up in broth or sweet and sour sauce for baking. Surely that's not how you treat friends?

Perhaps it's the territory of cold reasoning when you simply raise poultry for slaughter and treat them like expendable material without emotion, but that's not fair.

Well, yes, before removing slugs from a cabbage leaf, you can admire them, maybe even photograph them, but it's hard to talk about any kind of affection here; they're just a curiosity, like a crucian carp caught in a puddle... but even that's difficult; you can release the crucian carp, but it's definitely better not to release the slugs.

In terms of defining one's position within the world of living organisms and in general, it's probably easiest with mushrooms, which are neither plants nor animals. No one knows whether they have any emotions or not, but they certainly have some intelligence.

By picking mushrooms, we help the mycelium do what it was created for, namely, to grow the mushroom fruiting bodies, to attract our attention, so that we can spread the mushroom spores to new territories.

Here you can admire the mushrooms and eat them without a twinge of conscience.
