Valuable things are decay.

Valuable things are decay.

Everything is decay, said Ecclesiastes, and this is a truth.

Wealth is decay, the body is decay, food is decay, everything we create is decay, even our thoughts, which we sometimes write down in our notes, for example, to share with someone, or to remember ourselves, are decay.

As a rule, thoughts about this are directly connected to a certain period of time, imagining a view of the ruined Acropolis, or something else that, under the influence of time and other factors, has lost its former beauty and pomp.

I remember how my grandmother's house was swept into a lake by a landslide, and yet her ancestors and she thought this house would stand for hundreds of years... decay.

But, in reality, time is far from the only factor that turns valuables to decay. Circumstances trigger the decay process much more quickly, and humans are powerless against them.

For example, a ship might be brand new, with a powerful engine, but for some reason it loses its anchor... its chances of decaying increase dramatically.

And an anchor that's on display at an anchor show, rather than serving its purpose, is also a waste, and its value is no higher than that of a rusty blank at a scrap yard.

A tree's bark is very valuable, but for a lumberjack or carpenter, bark is waste; it's discarded, and for humans, it's decay.

In this way, stone walls are like trees: they need a protective plaster coating.

If the plaster cracks, it will gradually crumble, and the stone will then begin to decay.

Essentially, decay is something we try to protect ourselves from with all our might, like a skilled thief who can pick any lock, and for every trick we try, he has a countermeasure.

Essentially, we are all like a traveler in the desert with a lot of money in his pocket, but no source of water nearby, and no store where he can buy it. This understanding depends solely on time and circumstances.
