Feeling Good... and Being Healthy
A couple of decades ago, I was formally diagnosed with a heart condition that required me to take certain steps —and make lifestyle changes — to become healthier.
On paper, there's nothing wrong with wanting to be healthier, including the various medications I was prescribed.
The thing I have come to realize during the ensuing years is that there is a difference between "being healthy" (which I am) and "feeling good" (which I am not, at least not to a great degree) even if the two can be connected.
I find myself thinking about this, having just looked at my most recent lab test results following a clean Doctor's check-up which conclude that I am very healthy... and yet I am often tired and head-achy... which I was not, before making life changes to improve my health.
I don't suppose it makes much sense to judge whether "healthy" or "feeling good" matters most... ideally, we would have both, right?
A while back I accidentally discovered that it is the drugs making me "healthier" that are also making me feel tired... a known side effect. It's pretty common, even. And it's not even the actual drug that's the problem, it's just that lower blood pressure to some degree can make you feel less "sharp."
Which leads to the broader question of whether we should always place health above whether or not we feel good.
For example, my doctor recommends that I should eat a primarily plant based diet for health reasons, and I have tried to comply, to the best of my ability. In terms of body chemistry, it is definitely working... but my energy level is definitely lower than it used to be, and that does not make me very happy.
I suppose it's all a trade-off, in the end... and we have to prioritize what we believe to be most important.
Being in my 60s now, I do worry abour my health and hope to have many healthy years ahead... I just wish I felt better!
Thanks for stopping by and have a great remainder of your week!
