Is "Self-Actualization" a Luxury?

in WORLD OF XPILAR14 hours ago

There's a huge industry centered around some version of the idea of people needing to "self-actualize" and find the "true meaning" in their lives.

While I can't argue that such ideas might be noble and good, I also have to wonder whether such things are a pure luxury in a world where many people are mostly concerned about where they are going to come up with the money for their next rent payment.

The vast majority of the world is likely more concerned with the practicalities of life than their level of consciousness!

It would be tempting to say that self-actualization is just something for highly developed and wealthy nations, but even here in the USA more than half the population is struggling to make ends meet, on a month-to-month basis.

I used to think it was a worthy thing to pursue, and even spent a fair amount of money on books and seminars... but doing so didn't really bring me significantly closer to finding purpose and meaning.

Ultimately, I chilled out a lot more and resigned the whole idea of "self-actualization" to the category of "academic exercises."

One of the things I noticed was the number of workshops I sat in where it became patently clear that all the feel good lessons we covered didn't really translate very well to the external world of raising children, dealing with bosses who yell and scream at you, and the general greed and avarice of many human beings.

Is it — ultimatly — just clever marketing? A set of ideas designed to make us feel insecure about ourselves... so we'll hand over $99 to some "expert" who makes us feel slightly better about ourselves... just until we're back in circulation in the generally dysfunctional circus known as "life?"

Sounds like a luxury good, to me!

Which is not to say that we shouldn't try to better ourselves, as we can. But digging up some money for the next trip to the supermarket is likely more important than whether we are in constant harmony with the Universal energy.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your weekend!

How about YOU? Have you ever gone in pursuit of so-called "self-actualization?" How did that work out for you? Leave a comment if you feel so inclined — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!
