This Is The Most Hardest Waterfall I Ever Visit

Today i want to share my recent adventure in a Hidden Gem Waterfall, in Minahasa, North Sulawesi. This waterfall is known as Masongsor Waterfall or Tu'unan Waterfall — I'm not sure which name is correct, but this waterfall has been on my wishlist for a long time, ever since I first saw it during Covid.
The map available on Google is unreliable because it made me get lost for 45 minutes, and internet access was also limited since it's in a remote area, so I had to go back to the initial village to make sure I was on the right track. Fortunately, there were locals who guided me so I could reach the right spot. The trail to this waterfall can only be accessed by two-wheeled vehicles, it's just a 2-meter-wide dirt footpath, and it takes about 30 minutes to get to the parking area.
Upon arriving at the motorcycle parking spot, I continued the journey on a downhill trail through the villagers' clove plantations, until finally we faced the next challenge, which was descending a rocky cliff covered with dry leaves. I almost gave up when I was 1/4 of the way down the steep cliff, until finally the view of the waterfall peeking through the trees made me determined to continue the journey.
It took me almost 45 minutes to descend the cliff to the riverbed where this waterfall is located. As much as possible, I forced my mind not to think about how I would get back up later. because the view in front of me is very beautiful, Natural and Prinstine.
When I was at the waterfall, I saw 3 other visitors under the waterfall taking selfies. I explored every corner of the waterfall trying to find the right composition for my landscape photos and videos. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed because I came at the wrong time, as the sunlight falling on this waterfall was very harsh and contrasty. I arrive at 13.00, i think the best time to visit this waterfall in the morning or afternoon. I waited until the sun was behind the hill so that the light on the waterfall became more even and soft because the sunlight was blocked by the tall trees. This is some of the photo i take.
I spent almost 2 hours at the waterfall taking a lot of photos until I realized that I was the only one left at the waterfall at that time. I packed up all my photography equipment and began my struggle to get back to the parking area.
I spent almost 2 hours climbing back up the cliff, gasping for breath with breaks in between that I no longer counted because I took them too often. I lost my water bottle on this cliff because I wasn't being careful while climbing and holding my drink bottle at the same time. So now, I don't have enough water while the journey to the parking lot is still a few more kilometers with an uphill terrain.
I spent about 1 hour with many breaks, somewhat hoping that other visitors would come so I could ask them for a little water. But it was all just wishful thinking. I even started to think, why would I go through all this trouble just for a photo at this extremely extreme waterfall?
I even remembered a joke I once read that climbing a mountain is like an Investment, where you struggle first and enjoy it later, while exploring a waterfall is like a Paylater transaction and Now Is Time For Me To Pay.
When I finally arrived at the parking area, the sun had already started to set. I sped my motorcycle towards the entrance of waterfall to Kinaleosan Village, looking for an open stall to buy drinking water. In my heart I swore that I would not return to this waterfall if the terrain to get there was still like this. I can't imagine what the trail would be like during the rainy season.

You reminded me Indiana Jones who was in jungle and trying to find hidden treasure and also solving some quests. I can imagine that you had your own certain impressions about what you expect to see, it is often like you say depends on the time when you arrive, but also on weather condition, how many clouds and if the sky is blue. The time of the day will make the shadows to be long and maybe water to reflect sun light on certain area and that also would make a contrast with greens, wet stones and everything around.
I can imagine that the other tourists also were overwhelmed, often the reality is much more beautiful than the photography, because it is everything together the real size of mountains, trees, waterfalls, maybe also sound of birds or animals.
It was a pity that you lost your water bottle, I can imagine that you were very thirsty but luckily you managed to get back to your motor bike.
The photography is really impressive and it was a great day to discover the beauty of the nature.

Thank you so much, wuddi! Haha I love the Indiana Jones comparison - that's exactly how it felt, trekking through the jungle with no clear path! You're absolutely right about the light, the shadows and reflections changed everything. And yes, reality was way more overwhelming than my photos - the sound of the water, birds, The Wind is really a Therapeutic to relieve the stress And that water bottle... lesson learned for next adventure! 😅.. Actually today I will also explore another Waterfall, can't wait to share with you all. And hopefully this time more easier than this..

I can imagine that it is very exciting feeling being there and that it could be like something that catches you and you want to continue discover more and more, better and more beautiful. Nature is wonderful doctor for our soul, hope you will have even better images :)

Thanks for your perspective. It might not be the most beautiful for everyone, but for me, the 4-hour struggle to get there and back alone, without water on the way up, made it unforgettable. That's the story behind the shot.

Yes, it was cold and refreshing! But honestly after the 2-hour climb back up without water, I wish I had brought some of that waterfall water with me to the top 😅
