If you're new to Texas Hold'em, sitting down at a poker table for the first time can almost feel like learning a new language.

Blinds? Flop? Check? Call? River?

What does it all mean? 😃

Today, let's go through some of the most common poker words and expressions you'll see when playing Texas Hold'em on Steem4Poker.

🃏 Hole Cards

The two private cards dealt to you at the beginning of a hand.

Only you can see them.

For example, if you receive A♠ K♠, those are your hole cards.

♣️ Community Cards

Cards placed face up in the middle of the table that all players can use.

There can be up to five community cards in Texas Hold'em.

They are dealt as:

Flop → Turn → River

🎴 The Flop

The first three community cards dealt face up.

This is often where you get your first real idea of how strong your hand might become.

♦️ The Turn

The fourth community card.

Only one more community card remains after the turn.

♥️ The River

The fifth and final community card.

After the river, there are no more cards to come.

Now you either have the hand you wanted...

or you don't. 😃

💰 The Pot

The pot is all the chips or STEEM being contested during the hand.

Win the hand, and the pot is yours.

🔘 Dealer Button

The dealer button shows the dealer position for the current hand.

It moves around the table after each hand and helps determine the order of play.

SB – Small Blind

The player immediately to the left of the dealer normally posts the Small Blind.

This is a forced bet made before the cards are dealt.

BB – Big Blind

The next player posts the Big Blind.

The Big Blind is normally larger than the Small Blind and is also placed before the cards are dealt.

✋ Check

Check means you stay in the hand without making a bet.

You can only check when no bet has been made that you need to call.

📞 Call

Someone bets 5 chips.

You also put in 5 chips.

You have called their bet.

⬆️ Raise

Instead of simply matching another player's bet, you increase it.

That's a raise.

A raise can mean:

"I have a strong hand."

Or perhaps...

"I want you to THINK I have a strong hand." 😎

That's poker.

❌ Fold

Don't like your cards or don't want to match the bet?

You can fold.

Your hand is over, and you cannot win the current pot.

Learning when to fold is one of the most important skills in poker.

🔥 All-In

Going all-in means betting all the chips you currently have at the table.

No turning back after that.

Now you wait to see what happens. 😃
