FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 - Group A
We are less than 2 weeks away from one of the greatest events in sports. Russia will be the host of this magnificent party and, as usual, they will be paired in Group A along with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay.
The celeste are clear favourites to finish on top of the stage. They probably have the deadliest attack tandem with Cavani-Suarez and a pretty solid center back duo with Godin-Gimenez. In the past, Uruguay has been criticized for not being able to rejuvenate the squad but now they even have a young and talented midfield with Betancour, Valverde, Torreira among others.
A couple of weeks ago I had Egypt comfortably as runners up, but after Sergio Ramos applied some Judo skills to Salah in the Champions League's final, I'm not so sure anymore. If Salah plays his best, mainly against Russia and Saudi Arabia, my prediction will come true. Otherwise, the host nation will have a small chance. As per the asian side, they seem to be miles away from the team that made history in USA 1994 reaching the round of 16
The clock is ticking. June 14th is getting closer and surely Russia - Saudi Arabia is not stopping many hearts around the world, but is the long expected World Cup opening. They only played once, a friendly in 1993 with Saudi Arabia winning 4-2. Between Uruguay and Egypt there is also one friendly match in 2006, won by the south Americans 2-0.
For Uruguay's men's "A" will be the first matches against Saudi Arabia and Russia. Instead, Saudi Arabia and Egypt have more history: the asians crushed the african side 5-1 in 1999's FIFA Confederations Cup, while Egypt has won 4 out 5 friendlies with the other one sealed with a draw.
Finally, it will also be the first match ever between Russia and Egypt.
