The leather cover of the diary creaked as Timothy opened it, with the stench of mildew and deceit spilling out with the fresh air into the tunnel. David beamed the flashlight on the shaking pages. It was the handwriting of Silas Thorne-the respected first Mayor of this town whose statue stood proudly in the town square above them.
"It wasn't a disappearance," he whispered; his voice raced across damp stones, "It was a setup,

The-entry, made fifty years ago, told how Thorne had smuggled the gold from the fort to fund his election campaign, burying the chests when they were empty and framing the Head of Security-a certain Arthur Vance-for the crime. Arthur took his own life in prison, after his family was forced into obscurity.

Timothy's heart hit against his chest. "Arthur Vance. that's Tony's father. Tony's last name is Vance."

The acknowledgment recharged the cold air of the tunnel to electric. Tony had said much more than just rumor; he shared with me his burden of carrying the weight of his life, being the son of a 'thief' and living in the shadow of a man who had destroyed his family.

"We can't, with this go to the station," David said, his jaw hardening. "Thorne's own grandson is our Police Chief. This diary is gone, following official procedures," he said.

"Then we don't follow procedure," Timothy said, with an intensified grip of his hands on the wooden box. "We go public. The Town Centennial Gala is tomorrow."

The next night, golden lights blazed across the town square. The upper class surrounded the bronze statue of Silas Thorne. The moment the current Mayor stepped up to the microphone to start paying his tribute to his grandfather's memory, the speakers crackled.

Timothy stepped forward onto the stage, his mechanic boots still showing smudges of mud from the tunnels. David stood beside him in full uniform, his hand resting on his holster-as protector of the truth, rather than as a threat.

"This town honors a lie," said Timothy calmly. "This is what is written in the diary," he read aloud. Oppressive silence befell the crowd, heavier than the stones of the fort.

The Mayor beckoned to the guards, but David stepped forth with the rusty relics he dredged up from that box—clear proof that's on record in the police files. The drama can be felt in the air; the idol is breaking in front of his eyes.

In the back of the crowd, Tony Vance stood leaning on his cane. He didn't smile. He just nodded- tears etching rivers through the lines on his face.

The surprise came not from the stage, but from the audience. In an attempt to take the evidence, Tony walked away. This too had been his intention. It was neither the gold nor the apology had been what he wanted.

Later, Timothy found him sitting on his porch and exclaimed, "We did it, Tony. Your father is vindicated."

Tony's head jerked up; his eyes slitted. "Yes, kid, I know that tunnel. I found it twenty years ago." Timothy was ice. "You knew? Why send us?" "Because," Tony tapped his chest, "a crazy old man finding a diary is a conspiracy theory. A respected business owner and a police officer finding it? That’s history."They were his instruments. Not for avarice but only for the treasure that truly mattered: the truth.
