RE: SECRET CRIMES: Episode 2 “DON'T SHOOT. I AM INNOCENT!” (Original Story)

in #writing8 years ago

“Something terrible happened here. She was shot by a white, male officer. Is this another police shooting driven by ill-intentions? We do not know now, but one thing’s for sure.
For the sake of justice, we will find out. All we know at the moment is that she is being treated at the local hospital.

Sometimes I wonder what the media really cares about.

They spend so much time discussing every little detail a bout a shooting, that it becomes a game of who can break the story first and if they mess up facts and hurt someones reputation the seem not to care. (Clearly I am not a fan of most mainstream reporting).

I do like where you are taking the story. My inkling was correct about opening up a opportunity to discuss racism, but also how to handle difficult work situations where if you say nothing you risk going against yuour morals, but saying something could cost you your job.

Thanks for making this @sirwinchester. I know you have a lot planned for it, and even though this is only the second installment, there is a lot of room to create and explore a multitude of topics and feelings.

Thank you for your feedback! I also agree that mainstream media often wants to be "the first to report" for ANY price, publishing wild assumptions that haven't been proven yet, just because they want more attention!

It's an unfortunate fact that our media is a business. I would not be surprised to hear that in the future a news source will intentionally cause crime in areas only to have a certain company be able to hit the scene first. The only real way to shift the focus back on more positive things is to not click on certain stories as much. The media is definitely not stupid . They just follow the highest dollar posts.

It's a free country, but do people think that interviewing the mother, brother, sister, best friend.... and going into detail about how exactly the crime was committed and "getting into the mind of a killer" etc. is really what will prevent future problems? I understand news should cover a story, but what they often do is exploitative and immortalizes the perpetrator in a way that they probably wished for.

I don't know what the answer really is, but I know I don't often trust our media or find that they are always doing a great service to the people.
