RE: The Chubby Guy (continue the story)

That way, no matter how far they traveled, they would never be seen with their fathers again.

If his wife was alive, they would have to spend all summer in a cave, where they could watch as she died. But his daughter had died two weeks ago, and their home, their life, their home had long since passed them by. He told his wife to take his son with her to visit their graves: "Why shouldn't these children walk to the grave with my mother?" she asked. It was a simple request, and a request he accepted. His two eldest children were on standby.

When they arrived, they saw that their home had collapsed. The walls had been torn away, and the children sat up with trembling hands for hours, looking down on the graves of all the fallen mothers.

"They left this place without a goodbye. All they have are the bones of their mother and brother!" they cried.

But the men's grief was understandable: The town had come to an end. The night before, they were forced to leave behind five children and a house, their only source of income. As it turned out, the town's mayor had died in a car crash days earlier. The city's mayor was, needless to say, a former Marine.

But their mother, who had survived the plane crash, said she couldn't bear the thought of seeing her former town's mayor, whose name is Chris. She couldn't bear the thought of seeing a veteran. She simply could not bear that the men would die. They were the same men she had just told.

Her daughter, Linda, was devastated. After a long pause, "I know they loved us," she replied, "and I know they wanted something from us." It was the saddest part of the phone call, but in essence she was saying she didn't think things had been great between her daughter and the people of Manti.

Linda's son and oldest nephew are dead, but the two other sons—all of whom she had worked with since high school—are still in school. Linda's own older nephew, Ryan, is going to play football

Linda's own older nephew, Ryan, is going to play football for the University of Washington Huskies this fall.

He's only 18, but his life might as well be set for college.

"I'm going to finish high school when I'm a senior," said Linda.

She says she has enough on her plate to support a family, but she also knows more has to be changed in order for her son's future to feel truly great.

"Our schools aren't preparing young people with a great future," says Linda. "If you have students who aren't prepared to deal with their college education now, that's because their parents want to protect those kids and that's what they are doing anyway."

The Washington Post has found a few places where the UO students do better than most — places that are not located on the West Coast. Below is your next-door neighbor's education.

Upper Arlington High School in Arlington, Va.

One of our favorites: An all-girls English arts and languages school from a nearby suburb. Upper Arlington High School offers two- and four-semester levels, including a master's program, to prepare its students for college
