THE PROPOSAL

in #writing7 years ago

A week ago, I went to a place quite unfamiliar to me.

After delivering what I went to deliver, I called a taxi to pick me up. The driver took some time finding the address and the sun shone fiercely. I stood under a shade, brought out my phone, logged into my okada books account and looked for what to keep me busy while I waited.

I downloaded “The Proposal,” a short story by Lola Oseni and standing there, I began reading the 7 paged short story.

The story is written in first person narrative. The main character (whose name was not mentioned anywhere in the story) narrated how she has been dating Maxwell for about 9 months. Maxwell is in love with her but she isn’t in love with him and treats him like trash. He keeps on calling up to 15 times and she still wouldn’t respond neither does he give up. She says her being mean to him is a turn on to him, unfortunately to her and she uses that opportunity to enrich herself from his purse. No matter what she does he still kept calling her.

Maxwell invites her for lunch one day and she shows up only because she wants to have free lunch on him. And then the unexpected happens. She finds a ring in her drink. And then he goes down on one knee. Of course, you know what happens when a man goes down on one knee with a ring in sight.

Why do some guys put rings in their girlfriend’s drink? Is that an idea of a romantic proposal? Well definitely not for me.

Back to the story, was she excited by the proposal or was she turned off like I would have been? Did she say yes to Maxwell whom she didn’t love? After all, some people believe that it’s the man’s duty to love and not the woman? Did she eventually fall in love with Maxwell or only continued to string him along for all the free meals and gifts she got from him? Find out in this wonderful short story.

The story “The Proposal” by Lola Oseni is available on Okadabooks for free. Download a copy now and enjoy your weekend.

My book, “My Last Walk of Shame” is also available on Okadabooks app for 500 naira. It’ll make a great read for you this weekend.

I wish you all a fun-filled week.
