Observations on surveilance

Speed Enforcement Camera
The camera was located on a long, extended piece of road that may have been a popular spot for higher speeds. Its physical appearance was rather obvious since it was not hidden, but rather one of the large white boxed types with displayed radar warning speed. The area of coverage seemed to focus on the specific zone where drivers would be more likely to reach a higher speed. I feel most people notice the device due to its odd placement and its presence as an obvious gesture to deter speeders. The purpose of the device’s presence isn’t meant to be in secrecy, but rather to establish a means of enforcing the speed limit laws. The perceived threats that this measure is attempting to guard against are unlawful speeding and reckless driving. I feel that this measure can be effective since a speeding ticket is not desirable, but police presence may be a more concrete form of enforcement.

Street Corner Security Camera
The security camera was located on a streetlight near the entrance. Its physical appearance was rather hidden and camouflaged, so it was obvious that it was meant to go unnoticed. The area of covered seemed to focus on the vehicles entering and exiting the premises along with the people on the sidewalk. I feel most people would not notice the device due to its effort of camouflage and high placement on the light pole. The perceived threat that this measure is attempting to guard against would be any form of hostile activity in and around the area of the DMV. I feel that this measure of surveillance is not particularly effective in immediate defense. Other than visual realization, there is no real way to realize the presence of a hidden ‘eye’ and therefore someone would be willing to do something unlawful if they feel they are not being watched. Yet, at the same time, the presence of these cameras can lead to eventual justification of negative actions by capturing it on camera.
