Why I Love Writing Morally Gray Characters

in #writing8 days ago

Instead of writing perfect heroes, I find myself drawn to characters who make mistakes. Characters who have done things they regret. Characters who are capable of love but also capable of destruction.
Morally gray characters feel more human to me. They don’t exist in a simple world of right and wrong.

They struggle. They justify their actions. Sometimes they hurt others while trying to protect them.
In romance stories, especially darker ones, these characters create tension that feels real. Love becomes complicated. Trust becomes fragile. Forgiveness becomes powerful.
I think readers connect deeply with flawed characters because we are all flawed in some way. No one is purely good or purely bad. The most interesting stories are about growth, redemption, and choice.
As a writer, creating morally gray characters challenges me. I have to understand their psychology. I have to make their decisions believable, even when they are wrong.
Maybe that’s why I keep writing them.

Because in their darkness, there is always the possibility of light.

I don't know what to say. After reading the first lines, I had Inuyasha (a character in an Anime with the same name) in mind. If it comes to perfect heroes, you will rarely find them since everyone has his/her weak spots or flaws. If a character is only good, this would definitely be a very boring person, or a personality no one likes.
I do like the "bad" characters more, simply because they have way more personality shown, plus it takes courage to act that way.

Pity you use the hashtags #fiction and #romance again since both aren't found in what you wrote. If I would search for those topics since that is what hashtags are, I wouldn't expect to read what you wrote.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment.
I agree with you that truly “perfect” heroes are rare, and that’s exactly what makes flawed characters more interesting to explore. Even characters who seem ideal usually have weaknesses or inner conflicts that make them human. I like your mention of Inuyasha. He’s a good example of someone who isn’t purely good or bad but carries emotional complexity. That kind of balance is what I try to reflect when writing morally gray personalities.
You’re also right about the hashtags. I appreciate you pointing that out. I’ll be more careful to make sure my tags accurately match the content in future posts. Thanks again for taking the time to read and share your perspective.
