Learn how to reset your Cisco router password

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

In this article, I'm going to teach you how to reset your Cisco router password, assuming you have at least the technical knowledge about Cisco routers and the way they work, and you know a bit about the router's function, after expressing so much. I refrain from simple and trivial things. I just want to know that if you are newcomer and have not worked with routers so far, you're not much involved with this article because it can harm your iOS and even your router's physical ports, and then I will not accept any responsibility. But in general, after you read this article, you can easily reset your router password.

Well, to reset your router password, follow these steps:

1- Connect a terminal or a PC using Terminal emulation to the Router Console port, use the following settings to connect to the terminal:

9600 baud rate
No parity
8 data bits
1 stop bit
No flow control

2- If you still have limited access to the router, use the show version command to copy and hold the registry version or the registry settings, usually this is something like 0x2102 or 0x102. For example:

Router>show version

System flash partition 1 (Read/Write) 8192K bytes of processor board System
flash partition 2 (Read/Write)

Configuration register is 0x2102

3- If you do not have access to the router in general, such as forgotten passwords or TACACS, you can use the 0x2102 registry entry as the default.

4- Using the Power Router button, turn off the router once and then turn it on again. An important thing here for the 6400 Series routers is that you should do so by using the Node Route Processor ( NRP, Node Switch Processor (NSP) and re-jump in. In the 6x00 series, release the NI-2 card and jam it again.

5- Now that you're connected, hold down the keyboard break key for 60 seconds until your router enters the ROMMON environment. If you have not worked, follow this to find a combination key that will do the break for the router.

6- Type confreg 0x2142 in the command line rommon 1> to load and rotate the router from flash without any settings.

rommon 1>confreg 0x2142

7- Enter the reset device in the rommon 2> console. In this case, the router is rebooted but does not consider the previous configuration.

rommon 2>reset

8- In all the steps asks you to enter the word no, or press Ctrl + C to completely skip the setup steps.

9- You can see the router command environment, then enter in the Router> command command. You will enter the router's enabling environment and prompt in the Router # form.

Router>enable
Router#

10- Note that now you do not have to configure the config terminal, you must first save the information that is stored on the RAM. Then log into the config terminal environment, then set the configure memory or copy startup-config command to run the information And the settings that are currently in NVRAM are copied to the main memory.

Router#copy startup-config running-config
Router#write memory
Router#configure memory

11- Write terminal command or show running-config, these commands show you the router settings, in this case the router at the bottom of all the interfaces is typed by shutdown meaning that all interfaces are now shutdown and disabled. . But the interesting thing is that you can see passwords now, either encrypted or unencrypted (all passwords like VTY and enable etc.), can be readable and can be retrieved, and those that are encrypted. It can be changed.

Router#show running-config

12- Now enter the configure terminal command, the prompt changes as hostname (config) #

Router#configure terminal
Router(config)#

13- Well, in this moment, you can simply enable password and enable secret.

Router(config)#enable secret P@ssw0rd

14- Restart all ports that were shut down. Do this by typing no shutdown command for the ports you are using.

15- Enter the config-register 0x2102 command, or whatever you did in step 2.

Router(config)#config-register 0x2102

16- Simply press Ctrl + Z, and then press wr mm or copy run-config startup-config to save your settings.

Router(config)#Ctrl+Z
Router(config)#wr mem
