My first month on Steemit in review - Lessons and Observations by ZeroOoC

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

"Tempus Fugit" - time flies when you are having fun! I first joined #Steemit about a month ago so it's time to look a little deeper under the hood. This is a varied community with great content built on an exciting technology. What else have we learned?

Firstly, this rabbit hole goes far deeper than the initial glance over a minimalistic seeming interface might suggest. I'd describe as a mix of reddit/twitter and classic forums that creates and generates value/equity while empowering a community driven approach. The blockchain approach is fascinating , it also allows the userbase to build on top of it in a meaningful way and will still yield some awesome innovations in the future.

I've been posting a range of my work including original artwork, photography, gaming development content, animation, videography and some written word about technology and culture here and there to reflect my "ecclectic personality". I've been endeavouring to post only things where I have had an active hand in creating it, either in a creative or technical role. Some of them are team efforts. Most of it is older work but including some more recent stuff. Once I am done "archiving my work into the blockchain" I will be focusing more on recent projects and creating stuff exclusive to Steemit. I've been absolutely astounded by the level of positive feedback that this platform has given me so far.

People have come up with some crazy awesome stuff for steemit so far. These are some of my favorites or things that go well with it.

  • utopian.io - Contribute and get rewarded for open source projects built on the Steem blockchain.

  • d.tube - Decentralised video service. Youtube blockchain equivalent.

  • exodus.io - One of the easiest to use and best designed crypto wallets/exchanges rolled into one. Supports Aragon, Augur, BAT, Bitcoin, Civic, Dash, Decred, District0x, EOS, ETH Classic, Ethereum, FunFair, Gnosis, Golem, Litecoin, OmiseGo and Salt

  • d.sound - Soundcloud blockchain equivalent.

  • steemtools.com - A collection of apps, widgets, utilities and more all built on the steemit blockchain. It's amazing what people can come up with, and how quickly!

Alternative UIs & Skins:

Useful bots:

  • @originalworks - determines whether your content is [OC] and gives you a vote.
  • @minnowbooster - Pool post upvote booster, can trigger every 12 hours
  • @ginabot - Nice Discord bot that sends you notifications about Steemit
  • @tatsumaki.xyz - Great multi-purpose Discord bot for community management

A few more tips:

  • Powering up is cheap at the moment
  • Always convert SBD to Steem Power using the internal market, never the convert option.
  • Set your post payout to 50/50
  • Enjoy what you are doing

In conclusion I think that this is a platform/project with a lot of promise. It's possible to make it work and earn with, as long as you are willing to genuinely engage with your content and community development. It's a great introduction to blockchain technology and cryptocurrency markets too. I enjoy the "empowering" aspect of Steemit, there are some great people around willing to guide you and show you the ropes, never be scared to ask questions!

So there you have it, it's been a lot of fun so far! Discovering new content, people and projects every day, almost like in the early internet age of forums and IRC. After a while of figuring out who and what to follow your feed starts focusing in on some seriously impressive contributions and you can find some terrific stuff.

I wanted to thank each and everyone that gave me an upvote, resteem, comment or follow along the road. It is appreciated more than you know!

It seems very likely that I'll keep contributing to this platform for the foreseeable future and probably beyond. To be quite frank, I am very excited to have found this place. Full steem ahead.

Kap'Lah and have fun,

This is a really good post. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am 2 weeks old on steemit and this is a real boost to my own experience.

I'm glad you found it helpful! There's a lot of new information and things to take in out thereso it can get overwhelming if you don't occasionally cut it down into smaller pieces.
Happy trials,

Thanks a lot. I am your newest follower @zeroooc

Good to have you on board mate ^_^
Bless and spread the love.

thank you so much!
very helpful for noobs :)
zz

I'm glad you found it useful, remember that we all started at zero once.
I know it's tempting, but try not to upvote your own stuff as it depletes your vote and especially with a fresh account gives you next to nothing for yourself, better to use it for others. You'll be happier in the long run.

thanks for that. I honestly had no idea....still not sure I get it all yet.

Yeah it's a lot to take in! Give it some time :)
If you have any questions, lemme know ^^

Great post @zeroooc, very informative and helpful! I learnt several things thanks to you. I realize now and then that you speak German as your first language. I tried to become fluent in German many times but I guess without visiting Germany or Austria for a longer period of time (I was in Vienna once, shortly, and I'd love to revisit! ) I won't be able to achieve that goal. :)

Right back at you @shinyforest! It was nice to speak to you. Your work is rather inspirational! And should you ever worry just remember the words of the great William Joel:

Vienna waits for you...

is Nikki a short version of .... Nikolaus? Eee... hah :)

^_^
Shorter for Nikolai but only my mom calls me like that. ^^

I think that your post could become an entry for this contest: https://steemit.com/minnowsupport/@inquiringtimes/the-links-for-new-users-welcome-contest-round-3 I'm currently working on my own post with useful tips for beginners. Have a nice night :)

Aw man @shinyforest always looking out for me! Thanks!
Ill look at this with great interest ^^

Thank you for the great feature, I appreciate it a lot.
Perhaps have a second look at the grammar. The quality level can still be raised considerably.

this is an awesome post! you've learned more in your first month than I have since January. thanks for sharing all these awesome places to connect and tools to use! Up-voted and resteemed :)

Thank You kindly!
Decades of video game abuse have allowed me to become very quick at figuring out different menus and UIs. Hah! And they said time playing video games is wasted! Shenanigans; I tell you.
