Mami Wata is a well-known supernatural legend in Nigeria. "Mother of water" is what the name stands for. I was told about Mami Wata during my childhood, and some months ago I told my little sister about the supernatural legend Mami Wata.

The mother of water that lives in rivers, lakes, and the ocean as the most powerful water spirit. The Legend Mami Wata often appears beautiful with long hair and the tail of a fish-like mermaid. It is from this legend that so many people got the idea of calling a female sea as you find like Mami Wata because Mami Wata appears very beautiful.

A lot of people believe that Mami Wata has the power to to make someone wealthy, protect people from their enemies, or bring good fortune. All those living around the riverside often respect the spirit by offering gifts, sacrifice and prayers to her.

A lot of people say that those who have encountered Mami Wata may suddenly become so wealthy but they must keep whatever they encounter with Mami Wata secret by obeying her spiritual rules.

In a riverine village, there lived a young fisherman called Danla. One evening, while he was fishing alone by the riverside, he noticed something strange in the water. The river suddenly stopped waving and became calm and he heard his name being called.

Mr. Danladi stood up and looked carefully, and saw a very beautiful woman sitting on a rock in the middle of the river with her long hair shining under the moonlight with a small mirror in her hand.

Mr. Danladi became afraid and curious at the same time. The beautiful woman smiled at him and told him not to be afraid. The woman said to him that she was Mami water, the spirit of the river he is fishing in.

The woman promised Danladi that if he respected the river and kept their meeting a secret, he would catch a lot of fish.

The next day something unbelievable happened. Mr. Danladi caught more fish than he had ever caught before at the riverside. Soon he became one of the richest fishermen in his village.

But people started to ask about his sudden success.

One he felt that he should leak the secret out as it became too heavy for him to carry. He told his friends about the mysterious woman he saw at the riverside.

That same night, he went fishing again at the riverside.

The water remains silent. His net came out empty with no fish.

And from a distance, he thought he heard a soft voice whispering to him through the water.

The moral lesson:
Some secrets aren't meant to be told.
