Porto Formoso — A Hidden Gem on the North Coast of São Miguel
The parish of Porto Formoso is located on the north coast of São Miguel Island, in the Azores.
It borders the parish of São Miguel (municipality of Vila Franca do Campo) to the south, São Brás and Maia to the east, and Ribeirinha and Nossa Senhora da Estrela (municipality of Ribeira Grande) to the west.
With an area of 11.87 km², Porto Formoso lies about 14 kilometers from Ribeira Grande, the municipal seat to which it belongs.
The name of the parish comes from its natural harbor, sheltered at the end of a beautiful bay — hence the name “Formoso”, meaning beautiful.
Origins and Early History
The origins of Porto Formoso date back to the early 16th century. Historical records point to the will of the squire Pedro Vaz Pacheco, who on June 2, 1509, ordered the construction of the Chapel of Bom Jesus, intended to serve as a burial place for his descendants.
By the end of the 15th century, the locality was already recognized as a curato (a parish with a resident priest). Later, in 1568, it was elevated to the status of vigaria, strengthening its religious and administrative importance in the region.
One of the most famous Azorean chroniclers, Gaspar Frutuoso, described Porto Formoso in his historical work Saudades da Terra:
“A beautiful sandy bay is formed, and in the middle of it lies the place of Porto Formoso, which had a clean harbor, the best that existed on the northern side...”
The Parish Church
The Parish Church of Porto Formoso is dedicated to Our Lady of Grace (Nossa Senhora da Graça), the patron saint of the parish.
Historical records indicate that the church already existed in 1509, when the wealthy squire ordered the construction of the Chapel of Bom Jesus, complete with a crucifix and an altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin Mary, intended for his burial and that of his heirs.
Over the centuries, the church underwent several additions and architectural changes.
Today, it features a striking façade decorated with finely carved basalt stonework and an interior composed of three naves, reflecting the traditional architecture of Azorean religious buildings.
The Ladeira da Velha Obelisk
Along the road that connects Ribeira Grande to Furnas, visitors can find the Ladeira da Velha Obelisk.
This monument commemorates a fierce battle fought in this location during the Liberal Wars (1829–1834), an important historical conflict that shaped modern Portuguese political history.
Praia dos Moinhos and Its Historic Mills
One of the most charming places in Porto Formoso is Praia dos Moinhos, a pleasant beach nestled between high cliffs and crossed by a small freshwater stream.
Around the beach are several old water mills (azenhas) that once operated in the area. These mills gave the beach its name and serve as reminders of the traditional agricultural activity that once flourished here.
Ladeira da Velha Mineral Spring
Near Praia dos Moinhos lies Ladeira da Velha, home to a natural mineral spring rich in potassium.
The water emerges from the ground at an approximate temperature of 30°C.
In the past, this place hosted thermal baths that were very popular among visitors. A small rest house was even built nearby for patients who came to benefit from the therapeutic properties of the waters.
The Porto Formoso Tea Factory
While visiting Porto Formoso, one of the must-see attractions is the Porto Formoso Tea Factory.
Here visitors can enjoy:
- Panoramic gardens
- A small tea museum
- A tea room
- A shop selling local tea products
This location also serves as the starting point for the Porto Formoso Tea Walking Trail, a marked route that allows visitors to explore the exotic beauty of the surrounding tea plantations, one of the most unique landscapes in the Azores.
Other Places of Interest
Other noteworthy sites in the parish include:
- Hermitage of Nossa Senhora do Carmo
- The local fishing harbor
- Scenic coastal viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic
Together, these places highlight the rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and historical depth that make Porto Formoso one of the most captivating locations on São Miguel Island.
