Top Reasons For Trolling In Social Media And Why Steemit Has Lost Some GlorysteemCreated with Sketch.

in #amusement8 years ago (edited)

Did you know that boredom is the main cause of trolling on social media sites?

That is the result of a study carried out by Dr. Claire Hardraker of the Lancaster University´s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. However, probably we don´t even need a whole study for that since our own common sense might lead us to the same idea.

Their research reveals that most who engage in the practice - bombarding other community members with insults and threats - do so simply to trigger outrage for their own amusement.

Then these people do actually have an amusement problem?

The Tricky Trap of Boredom

Since I was born I can´t even remember one single day that I felt bored.

Probably it´s an educational issue. From the very beginning I was shown how to entertain myself at any time. From later conversations with my mom I know that she was especially caring about the natural development of my creativity, imagination and independency.

I didn´t need much to build a colorful world around me.

Have these people who only find amusement in attacking others never learned how to entertain themselves?

"An incredible amount of time and strategy can be involved in trolling, as my research into the techniques they use highlights" stated Dr. Hardraker.

It´s Damaging The Content´s Value

Negativity and negative people are part of our lives.

That´s also something I´ve been told right from the start, and it helped me to understand the world, find my place in it and don´t get annoyed by hate, envy or other sicknesses.

Negative impulses aren´t threatening until they don´t take an eco-system out of balance.

As long as trolling is practiced by a clear minority, a community is able to persist without any limitation. However, when these single activities start to become a movement, a social environment can suffer considerable declines in quality.

Dr. Hardraker resumed: "The time-wasting noise of one troll-post is relatively easily ignored, but the noise of hundreds of replies to the troll-post, and complaints about those replies, can entirely drown out the worthwhile content."

It´s not only the value of content that suffers, it´s especially their creators who do.

The practice of trolling has become a widespread concern in recent years with people, often under the veil of anonymity, deliberately provoking others in social networks.

I often ask myself how these people might behave when we were all talking face to face? Would they take off their masks? Or would they be as evil as their avatars?

Now regarding steemit there might be two theories: either many bored people have joined the platform during the past months, or a considerable amount of already existing members have become bored in the meantime.

No matter where they come from or where they are going, they are poisoning the ambient, impacting on content´s quality, annoying the community and - in the long term - damaging the whole brand.

A few weeks ago I needed to leave one of steemit´s chat rooms for that reason, a place that is actually designed for social interaction, mutual support and common amusement.
I could have stayed facing the absurdity, but that´s somehow not my way of dealing with these people.

A friend of mine used to say: they don´t even deserve to be ignored.

Everybody has to find their own way of dealing with it.

Some might say goodbye and leave, others might try to fight back in the same way they are attacked and those who have some energy left would probably intend to repress it with positivity.

To be honest I am kind of tired of it right now. I´ve been trying to spread love during weeks but that was like the famous drop in the ocean.

So I favor the real ocean over the virtual one right now. Surfers only attack other surfers when they steal their waves - and that´s an understandable reason :) The rest of the time we enjoy life together.

To the ones that find amusement in trolling: unplug your devices from time to time, do some sports instead, get your tired buddies out of that smokey cave, breath some oxygen, fill your lungs with energy and do something really entertaining. Life is so much more!

Best of luck ❤️

Use Digital Object Identifiers for research papers

Nice post @surfermarly. I have one tip when linking to academic research papers. The tip is to link to the paper using its DOI, which stands for digital object identifier.

The DOI for "Trolling in asynchronous computer-mediated communication" is 10.1515/jplr.2010.011 as you can see in the bottom of the page from your PDF link (note that DOIs are case-insensitive). You can make a URL for a DOI by appending https://doi.org/. Hence, you could link to Hardaker 2010 using https://doi.org/10.1515/jplr.2010.011.

There's one gotcha: the DOI generally redirects to the version of record for a study. In this case, this is a page on degruyter.com which tries to sell me access for $42.00. Ridiculous.

But all you have to do is use https://oadoi.org (stands for Open Access DOI). So if you try https://oadoi.org/10.1515/jplr.2010.011, you'll be redirected to the same free PDF you originally linked to.

So what's the benefit? DOIs are more durable. Academic publishers have terrible technology practices and link rot is a huge problem. DOIs help address link rot, but adding a redirection step. Furthermore, DOIs have metadata, so they easily allow looking up study details. For example, see the Crossref metadata for Hardaker 2010.

TLDR: if you're linking to a scientific study, consider using its DOI and oadoi.org if the paper is behind a paywall. This is especially important when you're making content that hopes to last forever!

Thanks for the upvote @fulltimegeek, it´s been much appreciated! This was supposed to be my last post for a while (for the mentioned reasons), so it´s nice to see that it has been actually a good one :) The Happy End

They don´t win, they lose (me) ;-)

The disconnect between the "real world" and the internet is so bizarre to me. People on the receiving end of troll attacks are not 0's and 1's they are in the real world and the attacks can have real effects on them.

Being mean to someone because you are bored is really sad. I am guessing that these same trolls would not go to a supermarket and start spouting their negative opinions and comments to people's faces. "Hey you, your choice of breakfast cereal is so f'ing stupid! You must be the worst person alive. My choice is much better in every way!" or "Nice face and way to be a different religion, color, or gender than I am. You suck! You have no right to be in this store!"

Perhaps some of these people would do that for entertainment, but at least there would be actual consequences. They would be shunned. Someone might actually stop them. They would at least have to do it out in the open to show others what kind of person they really are. Perhaps a current or possible future employer would see them for who they are. "Oh I was just about to hire you but then I remember that you were that asshole in the store last week who was belittling that grandma because she was buying that magazine you don't like. Piss off!"

At least it would take guts to be an asshole in public.

You know what? I´d love to meet these people in person one day. Just having some coffee with them and look them into the eyes. I bet most of them aren´t what they pretent to be online. Their computers provide them with a strong facade. Behind it you´d rather find a pale character without any self-confidence and zero charisma.
I´d really love to know them in person and ask them why... Maybe some of them will join us at the next steemfest. They´d rather get themselves well prepared for a nasty Q&A with me, haha

You are so right about life. Let these fat whale wars be the death of Steemit. It's a waste of time for creatives.
Too much in life that catches a creative eye.

what an amazing gif! :)

I don´t think it´s a whale problem. It´s rather a society problem. In a self-governed environment it´s even more complicated to control these impacts since we are all kind of responsible but it seems that nobody feels responsible. From my point of view in a healthy eco-system these movements shouldn´t ever been tolerated. But nobody is brave enough to stand up and raise their voices, supposedly because they fear being attacked as well. I´ve tried the opposite way as I mentioned: motivating people, welcoming newbies, spreading good vibes.

But hey, there is this point of time when you realize that you are fighting against windmills and that your time and creativity is simply not worth it...

I am totally on the same plane. I have gone through the together we can stop this madness. But, it's wasted time coming against 2Fat 2Rich 2Be Stopped and it's taken it's toll.
It's not just the few SP Whale bullies but their SP Whale friends, auto bots, and clone accounts. It's hurts the community and the platform and until @ned and others who could help the community do something we will continue to see Steemit lose great content creators.
Money, tools and inside knowledge on how to manipulate the system will always outweigh anything we do. I'm with you @surfermarly it's TIME TO SURF. “Life is too short to waste your time on people who don’t respect, appreciate, and value you.”
giphy.gif

Oh these were great words, thank you so much!
You are absolutely right. There is no reason to spend time at places where you are not respected as you should be... However that´s not a goodbye forever. If things changed some day, I´d consider to come back. Right now, I feel more comfortable in the water than anywhere else :) And I have to practice these tubes btw... haha!
Best of luck to you & happy Easter!

Trolls are a small problem and have no power like the few SP whales who devalue steemit's community. SP Whales have money, power and the knowledge to keep doing what they do without consequences and most steemians won't help SP Whale victims.

Sometimes a comment - independent from SP value - can hurt even more than a powerful downvote... It depends on the who and the when. We have to bear in mind that some people are weaker and more sensitive than others. I personally don´t care if somebody attacks me here since I am self-confident enough to know that they are wrong. However, there are a lot of people who go crazy about it. If we look away and don´t help them (even when risking to be attacked as well), we are as evil as the ones who are trolling...

Thanks @surfermarly for another excellent post... and you bring up some great points.

I often wonder "who ARE these people???" when I come across trollish behavior, both here and elsewhere. My stereotype bias suggests some unhappy person in their late 20's, living on their parents' couch in the basement, who hasn't had an actual job since flipping burgers while in college. So they take out their anger at the "unfairness" of the world (namely that they can't seem to get "something for nothing") online, by being a troll. Which, of course, is not true.

Trolls leave me with a sour note, too... I try to just continue to emphasize the positive and ignore the buzzing noises; but eventually it's tiring to be told that focusing on the value and having some pride in the quality of your contributions makes you "an arrogant intellectual." Or something like that.

One of the lessons learned from a past "Life Teacher" was to put your energy towards projects focused on (or dedicated to) creating a higher common denominator, not descending into a lower common denominator. By extension, the lesson was to do my part to make the "lower" as irrelevant and unheard as possible.

It's almost a variation on that famous Gandhi quote" "BE the change you wish to see in the world."

Thanks for your great comment, @denmarkguy. I very much enjoyed the read!

Some unhappy person in their late 20's, living on their parents' couch in the basement, who hasn't had an actual job since flipping burgers while in college.

That one made me laugh! :) According to the study I read and mentioned here, there is actually no real stereotype: "The image of trolling is that it is mainly the work of young people, but the fact is trolls come from all ages and backgrounds."

However, there is surely one denominator: dissatisfaction.

Your "Life Teacher" experience is brilliant. That reminds me of the famous Ex-President´s wife quote: "When they go low, we go high." That´s so true and effective!

I think that Gandhi idea works well when one starts to be the change and then many jump on the same train. It´s probably one of the few fights you can´t win alone.

I just believe we have to look for the pockets of positivity and hope... and support and strengthen them.

For example, YOU give me hope, so I read and support and put my energy here, while largely ignoring the whiners. As the inset in your original post suggested-- take away your attention from the trolls.

Thank you, @denmarkguy. You are right, mutual support is key here. However I am badly missing more of it on the platform - and especially from the influencers.

Goddamnit, was gonna post an awesome relevant thread that had so many great tips on how to prevent procrastination - but reddit has deleted it for some reason...

Now that's something that wouldn't have happened over on this platform at least..

This was the post
https://www.reddit.com/r/GetMotivated/comments/62x1go/victor_kiam_said_procrastination_is_opportunitys/

Anyway, great article!

Well, we have some crazy people flagging the whole platform instead. Not sure what´s the better option though :) I like the quote you mentioned on reddit. I´m a huge fan of not letting pass any opportunities since we don´t know if they gonna present themselves twice...
Thanks for the support and enjoy your weekend!

Yeah, flags will be dealt with by the majority - worse is the huge drama about it, like, that's what they want people - you are feeding them.

Thanks! Have a good one as well! :)

Exactly. If trolling was ignored it would stop quickly since these people are searching the feedback. But tell people that they shouldn´t care when they are attacked. It´s not easy to stay firm in this context, it requires a lot of self-confidence and inner peace :)
Thanks, I am fully enjoying it! Had a really good surf this noon. Now relaxing.

Now that's an interesting point. I've been wondering a lot lately how some people can really enjoy what they do here.
Thanks for sharing!

You are welcome and thank YOU for stopping by :)
Boredom is supposedly the most common driver. Another one is the outward projection of problems. That means that people who are not happy with their performance, situation or life in general tend to find the reason for their own disappointment in others. That´s strongly related with envy, another cancerous characteristic.
I am not a psychologist but have been living close to people that faced these problems. It´s hard to wake them up.

I find it hard, almost impossible to be bored, because I'm interested in everything. ;)

😄😇😄

@creatr

I can totally relate, my friend :)
The world is an ocean of opportunities...
Big hug!

100% agreed. Lindy West in her memoir Shrill talks a lot about her dealings with internet trolls who respond to her articles and actually was able to meet with one particularly aggressive troll in person. It turned out to be such a strange psychology that makes people do things like that and I think that you are on to something in your assessment - they want to create reaction for their amusement or to satisfy personal feelings of powerlessness.

Yeah, I think you are absolutely right. They need to compensate something they aren't able to achieve in the real world. We shouldn't give them a stage.
Thanks for stopping by :)

Did you write this after your recent comments in threads I saw where you kind of said the same thing?

Great blog post by you! Thumbs up sister.

Thank you bro 🙂👍
I am not sure if comments or blog post came first. However this was my last one so far...😉 Too much negative vibes at this place for my happy mind. Sorry to say that but I am tired of it right now... You will rock it anyways!!! Keep the good things coming 😉👍
