Hello Air-Clinicians & Friends,

Last week, we discussed about : What Are The Causes of Health Workers Strike ?!
**It made quite an interesting discuss as people shared a lot even mixed with personal experiences. We appreciate the input of the following persons who dropped their meaningful opinion and well thought contributions, some of which spoke from their personal experiences.
They include @mopelola, @drqamranbashir, @stacey31, @ anikys3reasure, @elvigia.
On the Topic of this Week...
In recent times especially in the health sector in Nigeria, there has been incessant strikes. Yes, this was even the topic of discuss last week and those that contributed gave reasonable reasons for strike but none mentioned the major reason why the health sector embarked on such strike action(here in Nigeria).
It is said that a body which comprises of nurses, pharmacist, laboratory technicians and other paramedics embarked on a strike action because the government isn't paying attention to them and granting their request for increment of salaries like how they would normally do for the doctors.
This has really been an issue between doctors and nurses brining about all sort of negativity between these set of individuals. Now the question is, is it right that nurses collect the same pay or privileges as with the doctors?
Let's get to hear from you all on this matter. Every comment gets a good Upvote.
We expect your candid opinions on this topic!

Traditionally nursing has been considered a subaltern profession. Although at present this has changed in favor of nurses. The truth is that both doctors and nurses complement each other. All in function of improving the condition of the apcientes.
Doctors and nurses represent the Jin and the Jan of medicine.
They are the champion team, together.
Nurses are the limbs while doctors are the eyes and brain of health care. Neither can work efficiently without the other’s presence.
BUT
Nurses and doctors should NOT be given same privilege because
Without doctors, the patient’s diagnosis would not be delivered whereas without nurses, the medical treatment and other services would be put to a halt.
Nurses take the bigger share of the tasks, whilst doctors take the bigger portion of the responsibilities and decision making.
But
Doctors can do the job of nurses as well. I mean they are capable of doing but vice versa is not true.
As for which job is tougherto handle, the answer will always be subjective. Interpreting a patient’s results may be hard but preparing the patient as well as the machinery for testing and results can never be proven to be an easier task.
You have said my mind. I submit to your position.
Yes! You properly analyzed all the facts on this subject matter. Thank you!
@air-clinic rocks.
It's been a while since I joined @air-clinic's public forum. I hope my views as a nurse continue to be welcome here.
With all regard for fairness and equality, I believe that privilege should be given to all health care professionals in the same manner. I speak of privilege in terms of fair rights and equal treatment.
Surely, all professionals have different responsibilities, varied years of education and differences in experiences, principles and standards of practice but that difference should not equate to difference in treatment. Being treated in the most humane way possible is a fundamental right and nobody should be given the right to decide who gets to receive more rights than others. We can't let ourselves play God, you know. We have the same goal - to care for patients across their lifespan- and I don't see why a difference in profession takes a away a person's privilege to anything. It just doesn't make that much sense.
Some people may argue that doctors be given special privileges because they have more responsibilities or spent longer years studying. But a person need not step up a to a higher medical position to be given full respect, attention, with equal rights and privileges. Besides, any negligence or malpractice committed by any party makes him liable either way and is judged NOT by your profession but through the degree of fault. All health care professionals should know that by now.
In the end, I believe it all boils down to a very fundamental ethical principle in the medical field - JUSTICE.
We need to give people what is due to them regardless of any social, professional or hierarchical strata. We do this to our patients, our clients, and most certainly does it hold true towards our colleagues in the health field.
For many years there has been this power tussle between doctors and nurses. Each faction have always tried to claim superiority over the other. To the general public the Doctor is usually seen as more superior to the Nurse. However maybe due to misunderstanding of the tenets of teamwork or a general feeling of complex, the Nurses, in particular, tend to try and usurp the status of the doctor when compared to them. A crucial look at both professions show that both of them have different but synergistic roles to play in the overall management of the patient. The doctor is usually involved in history taking, physical examination, testing, diagnosis of the patient while the nurse is concerned with the drug administration, wound dressing, physical care, hygiene and proper feeding. Both lines of work maybe different but they depend on each other with the ultimate goal of improving the health condition of the patient. As a result it is safe to say that both professionals need each other to succeed. Putting the variability of both lines of work into consideration it wouldn't be proper for both sets of professionals to be given the same privileges. The doctor's duties should be spelt out as are his entitlements; same as the nurse. I believe more emphasis should be placed on improving health care than in comparing the privileges of the doctors against that of the nurses.
When I think in this topic I realize that not every nurse and every doctor have the same responsibilities. A nurse could have a very high position in an organisation or hospital. For the other side, it's not the same a resident or a subspecialist. I think every professional has to receive privileges according both level of speciality and responsibilities.
Another beautiful point of view. Indeed we all have our responsibilities towards a greater healthcare. Cheers!
Hi. I believe that the nursing staff is essential for the care of patients and the proper functionality of any hospital center.
Doctors and nurses form a key as strong as the doctor-patient relationship.
However, the nursing staff can not have the same privileges why:
-Medical responsibility is greate
The years of preparation are longer
-It is the doctor who receives the complaints of the patients
-The doctors perfom the surgeries on the patients and manage tje complications.
Thank you for your views. We appreciate your opinions! Cheers!
Am of the opinion that nurses should not be given same priority but at least get close entitlements to what doctors get. My observation shows people relate with nurses not with utmost respect to that of doctors which needs attention. Nurses do attend to patients with good relating manner

Am of the opinion that the wide margin between doctors salary and other health workers should be closed a bit, even if their pay will be higher, not with the current margin.
We use to joke that a nurse is universal practitioner that, no nurse no medicine.
They do a hard work and I understand they have a reason to claim. But they don't have any reason to claim same Privileges as doctors.
In many health care systems both doctors and nurses claim that they don't get enough salary or other Privileges.
So the solution is giving a nurses the privilege they deserve and doctors what they deserve not making them equal!
Doctors are the brain of healthy care system.
Nice topic @air-clinic
