Portrait - Black & White
I didn't make a sketch before I started this. I intended to paint only in black, but later I painted the light areas in white after all.

Initially, it was an angular figure with only horizontal stripes for the eyes, black stripes. I actually wanted to leave it that way. Later, I made some adjustments, including one to the eye. Instead of black stripes for the eyes, I left the iris and pupil completely black. This is therefore deliberate and not unfinished work.
It was 100% faster than I expected. It didn't actually take me very long. I diluted the paint with water to get the different shades and then it was mainly a matter of waiting for the paint to dry before I could apply the next coat to get a darker shade. I started this the day before yesterday and did most of the painting then. The next day, I wanted to finish the eyes a bit more once the paint was dry, which I ended up doing, and today I just checked it over, touched up a few spots here and there, and varnished the whole thing. It didn't turn out exactly how I had imagined, but I'm satisfied. On to the next study (portrait).

Thank you for your comment. Do you mean the black and white, the style or both? While working on the week's old fish I thought the same, but it turns out to be hard to cover what I already painted. I should make a new one. 🤔

Yeah the black and white portrait you did has a unique pattern that’s why I said it’s nice. But this one you posted i cant really see any details of a fish except for the figure in the middle in cyan color. But it has no detailing this painting isn’t complete from what I see though.
It's a very unique painting; it looks like someone I know. I also like to start painting without making many strokes, sketches, or ideas, if that's the right way. Really, in art nothing is written in stone; how else would you try to be an artist?

That is interesting since it no one I know. I placed him in my sight but he's still a stranger. It can be easier to sketch first but as you know my sketching sucks. I do try to sketch daily after painting. Cubes, boxes no one would buy and dancers with or without faces.
I am not sure if this is a better method, but I didn't like using the white chalk on black canvas like suggested with the fish. Unlike what been told I cannot wipe it off easily at all.
This way of painting is more like the way I use the soft pastels, although I do draw the contours if I use them.
Thank you for your great comment.

I like this job, it's great)
I think you're too hard on yourself. Nobody climbs a ladder from the first step to the last in one go. You need to take it one step at a time, one rung at a time. I know a true artist will always be dissatisfied. Trial and error is the key to success. If we look at the famous painting "The Scream," it has many more remarkable aspects than its apparent beauty. I mean, it's not beautiful, but it's an imposing work of art. You don't need to resemble anything; that's where beauty lies: creating something that reflects your thoughts. Critical thinking matters little. What do you feel when you paint, whether it turns out well or badly? What motivates you? That feeling is beautiful; that's what matters.
