Introduction to CR1616 3V Battery

The CR1616 is a compact coin cell lithium battery widely used in small electronics. It operates at 3 volts and is commonly found in watches, calculators, and certain medical instruments like digital thermometers.
●The prefix “CR” denotes a lithium manganese dioxide chemistry, which is non-rechargeable.
●The number 1616 specifies its size: 16 mm diameter and 1.6 mm thickness.

CR1616 Battery Dimensions

The CR1616 battery measures 16 mm across and 1.6 mm thick.

CR1616 batteries are widely used in:
●Watches
●Calculators
●Remote controls
●Medical devices
●LED lights
●Children’s toys
Safety Note: Since the CR1616 is often used in kids’ toys, ensure children do not accidentally swallow it.

CR1616 Battery Equivalents

The CR1616 is a small lithium coin cell. Its equivalents include:
BR1616, LM1616, DL1616, ECR1616, DL1616B, CR1616-1W, KCR1616, 5021LC, 280-209, L11, and L28.
These can serve as direct replacements if the original CR1616 is unavailable.
Common Equivalent Models
●DL1616 (Duracell) – 3V lithium, interchangeable with CR1616, widely used in calculators and car remotes.
●ECR1616 (Energizer) – 3V lithium, compatible in size and specs, provides long-lasting power.
●BR1616 (Panasonic) – 2.8V lithium carbon fluoride chemistry, slightly lower voltage, suited for devices requiring that specification.
●280-209 (Generic) – Equivalent spec battery, often cross-referenced with CR1616.
●DL1616B (Duracell) – A variant optimized for higher pulse current demands.
●CR1616-1W (Various) – A welded-tab version designed for PCB mounting.
●LM1616 (Maxell) – Standard 3V lithium cell, used in devices requiring CR1616 specs.
●KCR1616 (Kodak) – Kodak’s branded version, interchangeable with CR1616.
●5021LC, L11, L28 (Generic) – Other codes used by manufacturers for batteries matching CR1616’s dimensions and electrical profile.

FAQ

  1. What batteries are compatible with CR1616?
    Equivalents include: BR1616, DL1616, LM1616, ECR1616, DL1616B, CR1616-1W, KCR1616, 5021LC, 280-209, L11, and L28.
  2. Can I use a CR1632 instead of a CR1616?
No. Although both provide 3V, the CR1632 is thicker (3.2 mm vs. 1.6 mm) and may not fit devices designed for the CR1616.
  3. Can I replace CR1616 with CR1620?
Not recommended. The CR1620 is 2.0 mm thick, which may cause fit issues or device malfunction.
  4. How long do CR1616 batteries last?
    Shelf life: 10+ years unused.
Low-power devices (watches, calculators): several years of operation.
Higher-drain devices (medical or fitness trackers): may need replacement within 1–2 years.

I swapped mine with a DL1616 once and it worked just fine, same size and voltage. Just made sure the polarity matched when putting it in.

I had the same issue trying to match a CR1616, and what helped was checking the datasheet from the battery cell manufacturer. It listed the voltage and capacity clearly, which made it easier to compare with other options. I’ve found that as long as the size and voltage match, many equivalents can work the same way.
